House panel investigates Defense Secretary’s absence
House Panel Launches Formal Inquiry into Defense Secretary’s Hospitalization
A House panel has announced a “formal inquiry” into the secretive hospitalization of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, causing alarm in Washington. The Armed Services Committee has sent letters to Austin, his deputy Kathleen Hicks, and Austin’s chief of staff Kelly Magsamen, requesting information on the events of the past few weeks. The inquiry was prompted by the revelation that Austin had been hospitalized for complications following a procedure to treat prostate cancer, and that even the White House was unaware of the “root cause” until recently.
“My colleagues and I have grave concerns about the handling of your absence and hospitalization. It is unacceptable that neither the Department of Defense, the White House, nor the Congress were accurately informed of your position or capacity. With wars in Ukraine and Israel, the idea that the White House and even your own Deputy did not understand the nature of your condition is patently unacceptable,” wrote Chairman Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) in a letter to Austin.
“Everything from on-going counterterrorism operations to nuclear command and control relies on a clear understanding of the Secretary’s decision-making capacity. The Department is a robust institution, and it is designed to function under attack by our enemies, but it is not designed for a Secretary who conceals being incapacitated.”
The Department of Defense (D0D) publicly admitted on Friday that Austin had been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on January 1, leaving the Pentagon press corps, Congress, White House officials, and even some top DoD officials in the dark. It was later revealed that Hicks temporarily assumed some of Austin’s duties without being informed of his hospitalization, and the late notification to the White House was attributed to Magsamen also being ill.
Austin, in a statement over the weekend, acknowledged that he could have done a better job in keeping the public informed and took full responsibility for his decisions about disclosure.

The White House has ordered a review of Cabinet protocols, while the DoD has announced its own review of records and communications to examine what happened internally during Austin’s hospitalization and to make recommendations for improving timely notification to the White House, Congress, and the public. Some GOP lawmakers and former President Donald Trump have called for Austin to resign or be fired, and one House Republican has even announced a bid to impeach him. Others, including Democrats, have expressed concerns and demanded more transparency.
Despite the controversy, White House officials have stated that President Joe Biden has “complete confidence” in Austin and intends to keep him in his position for the remainder of his term, although they acknowledge that the lack of information for such a long time is not ideal.
How did the lack of awareness within the White House and the Department of Defense regarding Austin’s condition impact decision-making processes and potential national security implications?
R the leadership of the Secretary of Defense. It is deeply concerning that there was a lack of transparency regarding Austin’s absence and hospitalization, as this has raised questions about the ability of the Department of Defense to effectively carry out its duties in critical times.”
The inquiry aims to shed light on the handling of Austin’s health condition, the communication between the Department of Defense, the White House, and Congress, and the potential impact on national security. The House panel is seeking answers from Austin, Hicks, and Magsamen to clarify the timeline of events, the level of awareness among key officials, and any potential gaps in the decision-making process during Austin’s absence.
The revelation of Austin’s hospitalization has come as a surprise and concern to many, considering the crucial role he plays in national defense and the ongoing global security challenges. With conflicts in Ukraine and Israel, as well as other threats around the world, it is fundamental that there is clear and effective communication within the highest levels of government.
The House panel’s inquiry highlights the need for transparency and accountability in matters of national security. It is essential that key officials, such as the Secretary of Defense, are in good health and able to perform their duties without interruption. This incident raises questions about the protocols and mechanisms in place to ensure the continuation of government functions in the event of a health issue affecting a high-ranking official.
Furthermore, the inquiry seeks to address the apparent lack of awareness within the White House and the Department of Defense regarding Austin’s condition. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of communication and coordination among key officials and institutions. In times of crisis, it is imperative that there is a clear and accurate understanding of the decision-making capacity of the Secretary of Defense and the implications on national security.
The House panel’s formal inquiry is a necessary step towards gaining a comprehensive understanding of the events surrounding Austin’s hospitalization and the subsequent handling of the situation by key officials and institutions. By conducting a thorough investigation, the committee aims to identify any shortcomings in the processes, protocols, and communication channels in order to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Transparency, accountability, and effective communication are integral to the successful functioning of the Department of Defense and the overall national security apparatus. The House panel’s inquiry into the hospitalization of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is a significant step towards ensuring the utmost efficiency, trust, and integrity in the leadership and decision-making processes that are essential for the protection of our nation.
