House approves bill to prevent federal gas stove ban.

House Passes Bill to Protect Gas Stoves

The Republican-controlled House has passed a bill aimed at preventing a ban on gas stoves. The bill, known as H.R. 1615 or the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act, would prohibit the Consumer Product Safety Commission from using federal funds to regulate gas stoves as a banned hazardous product or enforce a product safety standard that prohibits the use or sale of gas stoves or substantially increases their price. The bill passed 248 to 180 and is one of two being considered to prevent government regulators from banning the appliance.

Despite the bill’s passage, Democrats have criticized the measures as unnecessary and accused Republicans of using the issue to inflame culture wars. “The government is not coming for anybody’s gas stoves,” said Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA). Commission Chairman Alex Hoehn-Saric also dismissed the bill as frivolous, stating that “the CPSC is not banning gas stoves.”

However, opponents of the bill argue that it could hamper the CPSC’s ability to set safety standards for gas stoves related to tip-overs, gas leaks, and fire hazards. The bill will face opposition in the Democratic-controlled Senate and possibly from President Joe Biden himself, who has expressed his opposition to the bill. The White House has not yet indicated whether or not it would veto the bill if it passes through both chambers of Congress.
