House plans vote on resolution to block DC police reform law next week

The House Rules Committee is planning to bring another resolution to the floor next week that would nullify police reforms in Washington, D.C. This is a second effort to override another law passed by the District of Columbia regulating its police system.

The reforms which would be nullified are those passed in response to George Floyd’s death at the hands of law enforcement in 2020. The reforms prohibit the use of neck restraints, increase the access to body-camera footage, and revise officer discipline proceedings.

Andrew Clyde from Georgia introduced the latest proposal, coming after the House passed another resolution that repealed the district’s revised criminal code. This new resolution by Clyde intends to strike down laws passed by the D.C. Council in an effort to further reel in the city’s autonomy.

Republicans have been using a procedural tool known as a “resolution of disapproval” to try and nullify these D.C. policies. This forces Democrats to either embrace Biden’s positions or go against their party. The president has stated clearly that he intends to veto the resolution if it passes through both houses of Congress.

The House also plans to consider legislation that would ban transgender and intersex girls and women from participating in sports.
