Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) recently changed the office plaque of Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) after the senator’s visit to El Salvador, where he met Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national deported by the Trump governance. collins mocked Van Hollen on social media, suggesting that he now represents El Salvador instead of Maryland. From El Salvador, Van Hollen criticized the deportation of Abrego Garcia, calling it a violation of due process and suggesting that it reflects a broader constitutional crisis. This visit has prompted criticism from Republicans and sparked further political controversy surrounding Abrego Garcia’s case, which has garnered attention on both sides of the aisle,as another Democrat,Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-OR), announced plans to visit El Salvador in support of Abrego Garcia.
House Republican changes Van Hollen’s office plaque after El Salvador visit
Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA) claimed that he changed Sen. Chris Van Hollen’s (D-MD) office plaque after the senator traveled to El Salvador and met with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Salvadoran national deported by the Trump administration last month.
In an X post, Collins said, “Hey [Chris Van Hollen], I went ahead and changed your office plaque for you,” and included a photo of the updated plaque, which shows that Van Hollen now represents El Salvador instead of his state of Maryland.
The jab from Collins follows his earlier criticism of Van Hollen’s trip to El Salvador and meeting with Abrego Garcia, which included the Georgia Republican calling it “Traitorous.”
Van Hollen traveled to the Central American country just before the weekend, where he met with Abrego Garcia at what appeared to be a restaurant on Friday. The meeting was blasted by the Trump administration and Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, who have maintained that Abrego Garcia is a member of MS-13 and should not be sent back to the United States.
In a press conference on Friday, Van Hollen said it was time “to end the illegal abduction” of Abrego Garcia and “bring him home,” accusing the Salvadoran government of being “complicit in an illegal scheme” with the Trump administration. He also revealed that Abrego Garcia was moved from the notorious Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo to a smaller prison elsewhere in El Salvador.
As the deportation dispute continues, another Democrat announced a plan to visit El Salvador. Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-OR) indicated on Friday that she plans to travel to the Central American country to demand Abrego Garcia’s release, claiming his due process rights were “stripped away” and that this deportation case represents a “constitutional crisis.”
