House GOP targets Biden VA policies.
House Republicans Introduce Amendments to Military and Veterans Affairs Spending Bill
House Republicans are making their voices heard as they introduce several amendments to a military construction and Veterans Affairs spending bill. These amendments aim to rein in the Biden administration and prevent funding for gender transitions and abortions, among other things.
The spending measure will be discussed on Tuesday in the House Rules Committee, where it will be determined which amendments can be brought to a vote.
Abortion Access and Funding
One of the amendments, introduced by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), seeks to prevent any Department of Veterans Affairs funds from being used for abortions. This amendment eliminates exceptions to abortion funding in the bill.
Abortion and the military have been hot topics in the Senate this year, with Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) even holding up promotions to protest the Department of Defense’s funding for travel to obtain abortions.
Gender Transition Surgeries
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is pushing for an amendment that would halt any funding from the department for gender transition procedures. This amendment aims to bar federal funds from being used for ”any sex-altering surgical procedure.”
Additionally, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) has introduced an amendment to stop federal funds from supporting a program titled “Managing Gender Diversity in the Department of Veterans Affairs.”
Drag Shows
Drag performances are also being targeted, with Rep. Matt Rosendale (R-MT) introducing a measure to block funding in the spending bill from supporting “any adult cabaret performances or LGBTQ events.” This comes after Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, supported the cancellation of a drag show on a military base.
According to Gen. Milley, drag shows were never part of Department of Defense policy and were not funded by federal funds.
Green Policies and ESG
House Republicans are also aiming to roll back policies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. Rep. Matt Rosendale and Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) have moved to ban the enforcement of mask mandates related to the virus at military facilities. Rep. Lauren Boebert has gone even further, introducing an amendment to ban masks in nonsurgical areas of the facilities.
Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-TX) has introduced a measure targeting environmental, social, and governance initiatives within the VA. This amendment would prevent the establishment of ESG panels or advisers.
Following the Rules Committee’s determinations on the amendments, the House is expected to take up the bill this week. However, the White House has issued a threat to veto the measure, along with another spending bill, citing concerns about access to reproductive healthcare, LGBTQI+ rights, climate change initiatives, and diversity and inclusion efforts.
