House Republicans seek details on Ford’s collaboration with Chinese battery manufacturer.
Top House Republicans Demand Information on Ford’s Partnership with CATL
Top House Republicans have raised concerns over the partnership between Ford Motor Company and Chinese battery maker CATL, citing new information about the licensing agreement. They are particularly worried about the battery maker’s ties to forced labor.
In a letter to Ford, Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), the chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, and House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith (R-MO) demanded more information about the partnership. This includes details about the $3.5 billion factory in Michigan, which has faced criticism.
New Evidence Raises Concerns
The lawmakers highlighted new evidence suggesting that CATL had not publicly divested its share of the Xinjiang Zhicun Lithium Industry Company, a company linked to forced labor, before entering into the deal with Ford. The partnership was announced in March.
The circumstances of the sale raise “serious questions about whether CATL is attempting to obscure links to forced labor,” the lawmakers stated.
The lawmakers also issued a warning to Ford. They cautioned that if the company continues to rely on China for its inputs to produce electric vehicle batteries, it will be exposing itself and U.S. taxpayers to the whims of the Chinese Communist Party and its politics.
