House Republicans request documents related to Special Counsel’s investigation into Hunter Biden.
House Republicans Seek Records on Hunter Biden Investigation
A group of House Republicans is demanding transparency regarding the special counsel investigation into Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden. The lawmakers have sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, requesting documents that outline the scope of the investigation led by U.S. Attorney David Weiss.
“The Department pulled punches in this investigation, handicapping veteran investigators and preventing them from freely pursuing the facts,” the letter said. “The Department agreed to an apparently unprecedented plea deal with Hunter Biden after his attorneys threatened to call his father, President Biden, as a witness in the case.”
“Now you have appointed as special counsel an individual who oversaw all the investigation’s irregularities, who spent the past two months claiming that he did not need special counsel status, and who was responsible for the plea agreement that collapsed in court and is widely viewed as an embarrassment for the Department,” the letter added. “In light of Mr. Weiss’s record leading this investigation, we have concerns with his appointment as special counsel.”
The letter specifically requests two types of records: all documents and communications related to David Weiss’s appointment as special counsel, and any additional scope memoranda, directives, or instructions from the Office of the Attorney General regarding Weiss’s appointment. The deadline for the requested documents is September 11.
The lawmakers, including Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, Oversight Chairman James Comer, and Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith, aim to use the obtained records to inform potential legislative reforms and advance their oversight.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has acknowledged receiving the letter but declined to comment further. DOJ leaders have previously defended the investigation against claims of politicization. Attorney General Garland cited “extraordinary circumstances” as the reason for granting Weiss’s request for special counsel status.
While Democrats have defended the DOJ and the president, a recent ABC News/Ipsos survey revealed that a plurality of Americans lack confidence in the DOJ’s Hunter Biden inquiry.
