House Republicans denounce ‘sloppy’ Chinese hack of Treasury

House Republicans are denouncing a breach of the U.S. Treasury Department’s security by Chinese state-sponsored hackers to steal documents, calling it “sloppy” and promising the country will be held accountable once President-elect Donald Trump takes office next month.

The Treasury Department sent a letter to lawmakers on the Senate banking and House Financial Services committees on Monday notifying them of the “major incident,” the Washington Examiner confirmed.

TREASURY SAYS IT WAS HACKED BY CHINESE OPERATIVES IN ‘MAJOR INCIDENT’

The hackers compromised BeyondTrust, a third-party software provider, to take control of certain user work stations and access declassified documents, according to the letter.

A House Financial Services spokesman told the Washington Examiner the department is committed to providing committee staff with a classified briefing on the incident, although it is not clear when that will be.

Several House Republicans reacted to the news, blasting the Chinese Communist Party for the hack and vowing a no-tolerance policy from the incoming Trump administration.

“Communist China never misses an opportunity to undermine the United States and our national security in their pathetic attempt to become the world’s dominant military and economic power by the year 2049,” Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “The CCP knows there’s a new sheriff in town come January 20th and this hack is a desperate, sloppy, and misguided bid to steal US secrets before President Trump takes office.

“I look forward to working alongside the Trump Administration to hold the CCP accountable for this dangerous incursion & weaken their capacity to conduct cyberattacks against the US and our allies,” added Gimenez, who sits on the House Select Committee on the CCP.

Outgoing House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) said he looks forward to Trump demonstrating strength and possibly imposing sanctions against China for this hack and other security breach attempts.

“This kind of blatant subterfuge and undermining of U.S. institutions has unfortunately become the CCP’s modus operandi,” McCaul said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “The U.S. must make clear we will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”

Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-SD), who also sits on the Select Committee on the CCP, said he will work with Trump to “get tough on China.”

“This kind of aggression cannot go unchecked,” Johnson said in a post to X.
