House Republicans gain significant power through an obscure rule.
House Republicans Consider Using Obscure Rule to Cancel Salaries of Biden Administration Officials
Some House Republicans are exploring a unique strategy to hold President Joe Biden’s administration officials accountable as the impeachment battle rages on, according to a report by Politico. The GOP is divided on whether to impeach key Biden officials, such as U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and FBI Director Christopher Wray.
As an alternative, some Republicans are suggesting the use of the Holman Rule, which could potentially reduce the number and salaries of federal employees, as outlined in the rule. GOP Rep. Ken Buck of Colorado stated, “If we’ve got a problem, a policy difference, with Secretary Mayorkas, the proper procedure is to cut his salary in the appropriations process.”
House Republicans have been considering impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas due to his handling of the border crisis, and both Garland and Wray due to the Justice Department’s involvement in investigating Biden’s son, Hunter.
Buck, a member of the Freedom Caucus and the House Judiciary Committee, is open to using the Holman Rule as an alternative to impeachment solely based on policy differences. He believes that accusations alone are not enough and that all relevant information should be thoroughly examined.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is expected to support the use of the rule, as he reinstated the provision in January. However, some centrist GOP members are concerned that this could set a precedent for Democrats to target a Republican president’s Cabinet in the future.
Despite the potential use of the Holman Rule, impeachment proceedings against Garland may still proceed in the House Judiciary Committee this month.
While using the Holman Rule to target salaries does not necessarily mean impeachment is off the table, some Republicans are cautious about its implications. They worry that defunding individuals based on disagreement is not the appropriate response to a flawed prosecution.
It is important to note that the Holman Rule would likely face opposition in the Democratic-held Senate and may not ultimately be successful in reducing salaries.
