House Republicans Subpoena Alvin Bragg’s Former Deputy in Major Escalation of Trump Prosecution Probe
The House Judiciary Committee has taken a significant step in their inquiry into the Manhattan district attorney’s office, which charged former President Donald Trump, by issuing a subpoena to Mark Pomerantz. Pomerantz, who left the district attorney’s office last year following the investigation, is ordered to appear before the committee on April 20th, 2022. The move by the Republicans aims to put pressure on Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney to investigate Trump, which they describe as politically motivated.
The subpoena seeks to obtain information relevant for the Committee’s oversight and potential legislative reforms in preventing politically motivated prosecutions of current and former Presidents.
Bragg called the House investigation an “unprecedented campaign of harassment and intimidation.” and commented that Congress should not be “intruding” on New York’s “sovereignty”.
Pomerantz left the office in February 2022, shortly after Bragg took over, citing Bragg’s decision to “indefinitely suspend” the Trump investigation, whom Pomerantz believed was guilty. Jordan said Bragg went ahead with the investigation due to Pomerantz’s pressure.
Trump was arraigned in a New York City courthouse on Tuesday, charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records surrounding hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. Some sections of the media are criticizing Bragg for the charges, which they say is “painfully anticlimactic.”
