House Speaker Kevin McCarthy Vows To Release January 6 Capitol Surveillance Footage To Public: Report
Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy announced Wednesday that he intends to release thousands of hours of U.S. Capitol Riot footage from surveillance cameras on January 6, 2021.
“We just want to make sure we go through them all, and it takes time,” McCarthy spoke Breitbart News.
McCarthy spoke to the outlet about his intentions in his first interview since Tucker Carlson, Fox News host, aired unheard security footage from the Capitol Riot. Carlson created segments that portrayed a different narrative from legacy media outlets as well as the now-dissolved House Select Committee of the January 6 Attack.
Carlson and his colleagues were granted exclusive access to over 40,000 hours security camera footage in a deal with McCarthy. McCarthy stated that he made the disclosure public for transparency and to counter any rumors. “politicization” He believes that the Jan 6th Committee and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), fostered this idea.
“This is all about transparency,” McCarthy answered when McCarthy was asked why he had released the tapes.” I think it’s better for transparency that anyone can make their own decision up, and as we walk through these, there are many more hours of tapes than the January 6 committee told us. It’s not 14,000. It’s 42,000 hours.”
McCarthy assured reporters Capitol Police were part in the process of sharing clips and Carlson’s team. Security would also be provided. “taken care of.” Capitol Police said Monday that they had received a request from the agency. “that any clips be shown to us first for a security review” It had, however, been able to do so. “only been given the ability to preview a single clip out of the multiple clips that aired.”
Breitbart News’ McCarthy said that Carlson looked through all the footage so far in order to remove potential security risks such as exit zones. According to McCarthy, the House speaker, Capitol Police examined the tapes and identified one concern which was addressed by the team.
McCarthy stated that Carlson would not be the only journalist who could access the tapes.
“Like any news organization, different people get exclusives,” He said that CNN and January 6 Committee had received previously footage that was publically viewed. “all the time, and nobody complained.”
Democrat Rep. Bennie G. Thompson was the Chair of the House January 6 Committee. The Associated Press McCarthy’s decision to make the security footage available only to selected people was incorrect. “a dereliction of duty.”
“The speaker decided it was more important to give in to a Fox host who spews lies and propaganda than to protect the Capitol,” Thompson added that the January 6th was his birthday in a statement. “one of the darkest days in the history of our democracy.”
Thompson confessed later to the Committee. Never had access The footage was not viewable to staff.
“I’m actually not aware of any member of the Committee who had access. We had a team of employees who kind of went through the video,” According to him, CNN.
Chuck Schumer, Democratic Majority Senator of the Democratic Majority, demanded that Fox News silence Carlson after Carlson was exposed. He claimed that Carlson is threatening American safety and hurting those on January 6.
“I urge Fox News to order Carlson to cease propagating the big lie on his network and to level with their viewers about the truth, the truth, behind the efforts to mislead the public. Conduct like theirs is just asking for another January 6 to happen,” Schumer .
McCarthy said to Breitbart News that he was sorry for his remarks on the Senate Floor.
“The Democrats always go to censorship,” McCarthy agreed. McCarthy stated, “You viewed what they did on the laptop. You saw what they did on Twitter. They want government to control what people can see and know.
“This is the difference between us,” He added. “I believe in the Constitution. I trust the American people, and you should just have the ability to have all the information and let people make their own judgment.”
