House Democrat Whip Katherine Clark said that a new House Speaker vote is scheduled for Tuesday at noon, according to Reuters.
Republican Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) managed to secure the nomination on Friday after House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), who initially won the nomination, dropped out of the race the day before.
However, according to GOP officials, Jordan still faces resistance from at least “10 to 20” members and may not have enough votes to be elected.
Following the unexpected removal of Republican Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) was appointed as the interim Speaker.
Unfortunately, the House has been unable to carry out most of its tasks, including voting on an aid package for Israel after the recent Hamas terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile, it remains uncertain whether Jordan will be able to secure at least 217 votes, which is the minimum required for election. Republicans can only afford to lose four votes and still maintain a majority.
Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) told Face the Nation that he will support Jordan as the nominee and firmly believes that he can secure the necessary votes for the position.
