Houthi Terrorists Sink Major Commercial Ship; Biden’s Deterrence Strategy Fails
Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists have attacked and sunk a major commercial shipping vessel, the M/V Tutor, near the Arabian Peninsula, escalating the threat to international shipping lanes that lead to the Suez Canal. This incident, marked by the use of an unmanned surface vessel by the Houthis, resulted in severe damage to the M/V Tutor, particularly flooding its engine room. This attack led to the death of one crew member and forced the remaining crew to abandon the ship. They were subsequently rescued by the USS Philippine Sea and partner forces. Despite condemnation and existing security measures, President Joe Biden’s administration has struggled to effectively deter such attacks. The M/V Tutor, a Liberian-flagged and Greek-owned bulk cargo carrier, is believed to have sunk, with debris and oil observed at its last reported location.
Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists have sunk another major commercial shipping vessel near the Arabian Peninsula as President Joe Biden has failed to deter Houthi attacks on international shipping lanes leading to the Suez Canal.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement that the Houthis carried out the attack last week on the M/V Tutor — a Liberian flagged, Greek-owned and operated bulk cargo carrier — using an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) resulting in severe flooding and damage to the engine room.
One crew member who went missing following the attack later died, according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. The rest of the crew was forced to abandon the ship and were rescued by the USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and partner forces.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said late Tuesday that debris and oil were seen at the ship’s last reported location and that “the vessel is believed to have sunk.”

The day prior to the attack on the M/V Tutor, the Houthis hit the M/V Verbena — a Palauan-flagged, Ukrainian-owned, Polish-operated bulk cargo carrier — with two anti-ship cruise missiles (ASCM), causing damage and fires aboard the ship.

“The crew continues to fight the fire. One civilian mariner was severely injured during the attack,” U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement. “Aircraft from USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) medically evacuated the injured mariner to a partner force ship nearby for medical attention.”
The Houthis have been emboldened by President Joe Biden’s refusal to hold them accountable for their terrorist attacks by launching the type of strikes needed to deter further aggression.
“This continued reckless behavior by the Iranian-backed Houthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of mariners across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden,” the statement said. “The Houthis claim to be acting on behalf of Palestinians in Gaza and yet they are targeting and threatening the lives of third country nationals who have nothing to do with the conflict in Gaza.”
