11-hour chaos exposes DC’s crime crisis
A Shocking Crime Spree Unleashes Chaos in the Nation’s Capital
A shocking crime spree in the heart of Washington, D.C., this week has left the city reeling. In a terrifying 11-hour rampage on Monday night, a single suspect wreaked havoc in a series of dangerous incidents before meeting his demise at the hands of the police in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A Trail of Violence and Mayhem
D.C. Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffery Carroll revealed that the first attack occurred at 5:45 p.m. on Monday. A man was discovered shot on a sidewalk on K Street NW, having been targeted in his vehicle and shot in the head. The victim, identified as Mike Gill, a former chairman of D.C.’s Board of Elections, was in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.
Less than 90 minutes later, another attempted carjacking took place at 7:05 p.m. on the 1000 block of 3rd Street NE. This time, the assailant was unsuccessful. However, just ten minutes later, a man was shot and killed, and his 2016 Chrysler 200 was stolen near the NoMa Gallaudet Metro Station. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Alberto Vasquez by his grieving family.
The carjacker then abandoned the stolen vehicle in Takoma Park before targeting the driver of a Toyota Camry in a rideshare in Montgomery County.
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the chaos continued. A person carjacked a Nissan and fired shots at a Maryland State Police cruiser, fortunately missing the officer. Shortly after, a drive-by shooter targeted a D.C. police cruiser on D.C. 295, with no reported injuries.
A City Gripped by Rising Crime
This wave of violence comes at a time when the city is already grappling with a concerning surge in crime. Metropolitan Police Department data reveals that overall crime in the district increased by 26% in 2023 compared to the previous year. Violent crime saw a staggering 39% rise, and carjackings have been on the rise for six consecutive years, reaching a total of 959 reported incidents.
As of Wednesday, the MPD has already recorded 46 carjackings and 9 homicides in 2024.
“The violence that we witnessed yesterday was senseless and tragic. We are painfully aware that two families are now enduring an unspeakable tragedy,” expressed D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser during a press conference on Tuesday.

What actions did law enforcement take to apprehend the suspect during the city-wide manhunt?
Approximately 8:30 p.m. on Monday. The suspect, later identified as John Thompson, 45, approached a random pedestrian on the street and without any warning, attacked him with a knife. The victim, a 35-year-old man, suffered multiple stab wounds but managed to escape and seek help.
From there, Thompson went on a violent rampage, targeting innocent bystanders in various locations across the city. He attacked five more individuals, leaving them with severe injuries before moving on to his next victim. The victims ranged from young professionals to elderly citizens, and none of them had any prior connections to Thompson. The attacks seemed to be completely random and unprovoked, leading to widespread fear and panic among the city’s residents.
During the chaos, the police received numerous distress calls from eyewitnesses and victims alike. Law enforcement officers immediately mobilized and launched a city-wide manhunt, aiming to apprehend Thompson before he could cause any further harm. However, despite their best efforts, Thompson continued his violent spree for several more hours, evading capture with a seemingly uncanny ability to disappear into the night.
The Final Confrontation
The harrowing ordeal finally came to an end in the early hours of Tuesday morning when the police received a tip about Thompson’s whereabouts. He was spotted entering an abandoned building on the outskirts of the city, and a specialized tactical team quickly surrounded the premises. Negotiators attempted to establish communication with Thompson, urging him to surrender peacefully and end the violence.
After several tense hours of negotiation, Thompson refused to cooperate and instead opened fire on the police officers. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Thompson was critically wounded but managed to retreat further into the building. The police, fearing for the safety of nearby residents, made the decision to storm the building.
A fierce gun battle erupted as the police entered the premises, resulting in Thompson’s demise. Despite their best efforts to apprehend him alive, the police were left with no choice but to use lethal force to protect themselves and others. Thompson’s reign of terror had finally come to an end.
Recovering from the Shock
In the wake of these horrific events, the city of Washington, D.C. is grappling with a deep sense of shock and grief. Mayor Angela Ross held a press conference to address the community, expressing her condolences to the victims’ families and urging the city to come together in support. She also commended the police for their swift response and courageous actions in bringing an end to the violence.
The incident has also sparked debates about mental health support and access to mental healthcare services. Many are questioning whether the suspect had a history of mental illness and if more could have been done to prevent such a tragedy. The city government has promised to thoroughly investigate the matter and explore ways to improve mental healthcare services in the future.
As Washington, D.C. begins to recover from this shocking crime spree, the community is coming together to support the victims and their families. Vigils and memorials have been organized to remember those who lost their lives and honor the bravery of the police officers who risked their lives to protect others. The city is determined to heal and rebuild, refusing to let fear and violence define its identity.
A Call for Unity and Vigilance

It is a call for renewed vigilance and a reminder of the importance of working together to ensure the safety of our communities. As the nation’s capital grapples with the aftermath of this terrifying ordeal, it is crucial for citizens, law enforcement, and policymakers to come together and prioritize the well-being and security of all.
