How 30-minutes per Day Can Add Two Years to Your Life…Without Exercise
Exercise is written all over the headline. But I’m not here to trick you into exercise. In fact, I’m not even going to give you a list of 30-minute healthy recipes. Nope. This news is not about being active, but about relaxing in a comfortable seat. It might be time for you to get a book.
In what might be the most surprising bit of news I’ve read in a while, I learned that sitting with a book for at least 30 minutes per day has the potential to lead to a longer life. It could also help maintain cognition and prevent dementia.
Yale University researchers conclude reading Reading books is associated with a longer and healthier life. Looking at data collected from the University of Michigan’s Health and Retirement Study (HRS), they found that reading books for at least 30 minutes per day was associated with living two years longer when compared to non-readers. The study also showed that book readers are 23 percent less likely than people who only read magazines and newspapers.
Why are books better than magazines, newspapers, Facebook and Instagram? Books encourage deeper engagement. Reading books, as opposed to reading news headlines or skimming the news, encourages people not to just read them but to pay more attention and use their brains more.
According to research, reading books can help people make better connections with the outside world. These connections can activate the brain’s ability to forge more pathways between the hemispheres. Brain health can be improved by activating and creating neural networks. This is closely linked to preventing cognitive decline and dementia. The region may also benefit from more blood flow if you read closely and are engaged.
It can help you live longer and more comfortably by reading a book. The best anti-aging tool you have is reading!
