Teen dies after taking viral ‘One Chip Challenge’. How did this happen?
A Tragic Incident: Massachusetts Teen Dies After Participating in Viral ‘One Chip Challenge’
A 14-year-old Massachusetts teen tragically lost his life after taking part in the infamous “One Chip Challenge.” This social media dare involves consuming what is claimed to be the spiciest tortilla chip in the world and enduring the burn without drinking water. The chip, produced by Paqui, comes in a coffin-shaped container, adding to the challenge’s allure.
On Friday, Harris Wolobah, a student at Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester, participated in the challenge and sadly passed away on the same day, leaving his family devastated. While the cause of death has not been officially determined, his loved ones believe that his involvement in the challenge played a role.
According to reports, Wolobah felt unwell after eating the chip and visited the nurse’s office at school. Later, he was picked up by his mother, Lois Wolobah. Although he initially seemed to recover at home, his brother informed their mother that he had fainted, prompting them to seek immediate help.
First responders arrived at Wolobah’s residence at 4:30 p.m., finding him unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to honor Wolobah’s memory and support his grieving family.
This tragic incident has raised concerns among the community, with Father Jonathan Slavinskas highlighting the need to address the underlying issues surrounding such challenges. He expressed his disbelief, saying, “This pauses you for a moment and makes you question, ‘What is going on? How did this happen?'”
Dr. Lauren Rice of Tufts Medical Center has witnessed various health problems associated with the One Chip Challenge. She mentioned that individuals often experience chest pain, palpitations, and other discomforts due to capsaicin, the compound responsible for the chip’s extreme spiciness.
According to Poison.org, capsaicin consumption can lead to mouth and throat pain, as well as more severe issues like heart attacks and esophageal damage. The site advises caution when consuming capsaicin-containing products, emphasizing the potential dangers.
As the investigation into Wolobah’s death continues, this tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with viral challenges and the importance of prioritizing safety.
