How Harris and Trump are preparing for debate – Washington Examiner

Vice President Kamala ⁤Harris and former President Donald Trump are ‌finalizing their ⁢preparations for their first debate, which will take place on Tuesday night. While Trump has stated that ⁢he does not feel the need to prepare extensively ⁤for debates,⁢ Harris has been engaged in a “debate camp” in Pittsburgh, bracing herself for personal⁢ attacks and strategizing on how to ⁢counter Trump’s typical inaccuracies. She is utilizing Democratic consultant Philippe Reines, who previously helped Hillary Clinton prepare for her ⁢debates against Trump.

In contrast, Trump has opted for policy discussions with his campaign staff instead of mock debates, spending time at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. His team asserts that he is effectively prepared for the⁢ debate by focusing on Harris’s positions rather than rehearsing debate exchanges. With Trump’s extensive debate experience, there is anticipation that he will⁤ be ready for the ⁢showdown.

How Harris and Trump are preparing for debate

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are not making any public appearances on Monday as they wrap up their final preparations before their first and possibly only debate on Tuesday night.

Trump has previously indicated he does not need to prepare for debates, while Harris has been in Pennsylvania preparing for the event for days. The two will face each other for the first time at the ABC News presidential debate at 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Here’s how each candidate has prepared for the event.

Harris’s preparation

Harris has been staying in a hotel in downtown Pittsburgh following a campaign visit there last week for an intensive “debate camp.” She has been preparing for personal attacks from Trump and figuring out ways to counter factual misrepresentations he typically offers in these settings.

Harris is using Democratic consultant Philippe Reines, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton, to act as the former president during their preparations. He played the role of Trump for Clinton’s 2016 campaign when she prepared to debate him.

2024 PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE LIVE UPDATES: TRUMP AND HARRIS FACE OFF IN ABC SHOWDOWN

“I dressed up like him, but I didn’t put on an orange face or a wig,” Reines told the Michael Smerconish Program on Sirius. “Although one day, I put self-tanner on one half of my face and no one noticed, so I didn’t bother again.”

During Clinton’s campaign, Reines reportedly ran through eight full 90-minute debate preparation sessions acting as Trump with the former secretary of state.

“In the case of Donald Trump, a lot of it is learning how to filter out the noise and expect the unexpected,” he said.

The Harris campaign is also aware of Trump’s experience, and perhaps comfort, in front of a national audience in this setting. He is running his third presidential campaign and this will be his seventh presidential debate.

“We expect Donald Trump will be ready for the debate,” Kevin Munoz, a spokesman for the Harris campaign, said in a statement to the Washington Post. “He is a showman who won his most recent debate back in June, and we know he has been practicing even more and preparing harder than ever before.

“The Vice President will come to the debate prepared to share her vision for a new way forward for our country that turns the page on the past, and we believe it will crystallize for the American people what is at stake in this election,” he continued.

Trump’s preparation

Trump has said he is not preparing for the debate, opting instead to participate in “policy sessions” with his campaign staff. Trump spent much of the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where the sessions with aides and allies included running through the plans and positions Harris has staked out rather than mocking up an entire 90-minute debate. Before the June CNN debate between Trump and Biden, he did not run through mock debates and instead rehearsed policy discussion points.

On NBC News’s Meet the Press, Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt argued that the former president is “well prepared” for Tuesday night’s debate and that he is “very well read” on Harris’s political record. Leavitt said he will ask Harris why she does not enact some of her policy goals while she is still the vice president under President Joe Biden.

The Trump campaign previously recruited former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who left the Democratic Party and endorsed Trump, to help his campaign face Harris on the debate stage. Gabbard went to Mar-a-Lago last month to aid the Trump campaign with its preparations.

At the time, Leavitt said Trump has “proven to be one of the best debaters in political history as evidenced by his knockout blow to Joe Biden. He does not need traditional debate prep but will continue to meet with respected policy advisers and effective communicators like Tulsi Gabbard, who successfully dominated Kamala Harris on the debate stage in 2020.”
