How media turn award shows into progressive Pep Rallies
Award shows are getting more woke and have the ratings that prove it.
Each year, Hollywood galas attract significantly fewer viewers than previous telecasts. Television ratings are declining due to a fragmented media landscape. However, the percentage of award shows dropping is alarming.
The Academy Awards is frequently cited as one of the most shocking examples.
The 2010 Oscars attracted 41.6 million viewers, the kind of numbers you might expect from a beloved sitcom’s curtain call.
Now? The 2022 Oscars Telecast attracted just 16.6 million viewers, — and that number represented a 58% leap from the previous year (10.5 million).
Hollywood is becoming more awake across the board. From hyper-diverse casting to incorporating progressive messages into its content, Hollywood is becoming increasingly conscious. Awards shows are the best and most popular way for the industry’s progressive bona fides to be displayed.
Speech after speech. Joke after joke. Every once in awhile, a TV screen can show homage to the craft.
This change is supported by the mainstream Hollywood press.
The #OscarsSoWhite movement of 2016 showcased the industry’s lack of diversity and set a template for both the industry and media to follow. That was only part of the change that was necessary. Team Oscar didn’t give many awards to performers of color for years.
Halle Berry won Best Actress for Halle Berry “Monsters Ball” It was the first time that this happened in 2002. black woman won that award. This honor is still held by only one black woman.
While the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag campaign was powerful, the unintended results continue to this day. Critics rush to ensure that there are enough diverse nominees for major awards bodies, and they do so every time they announce them.
If Hollywood continued to exclude black or brown stars from the year’s biggest awards, that’s clearly problematic … although it reflects poorly on the allegedly enlightened industry, not the public at large.
If, in one particular year or category, more white faces make the cut, it’s hardly time for a new hashtag campaign.
That’s what you should tell the press. They meticulously count every face, creed, gender, and age when reporting on awards shows news.

Deadline shared recent Golden Globe nominationsThis is a deep dive into the variety of nominees.
This year the HFPA failed to nominate any Black films with strong themes in the Best Picture category, despite the strong lineup which included Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (soon to surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with $411M+), TriStar’s Woman King (one of the highest grossing adult pics of autumn with $67.1M stateside), Apple Original Films’ Emancipation, Orion’s Till and Focus Features’ Letitia Wright Cannes title, The Silent Twins.
Uh oh.
Many quality films are not selected for the Oscars every year. “Top Gun: Maverick” came up light in the Golden Globe nominations, despite being the year’s top-grossing film and earning raves from both audiences and critics alike.
One of the films singled out by Deadline, Will Smith’s “Emancipation,” A 46%“rotten” rating at Rotten Tomatoes. Maybe that’s why it didn’t make the cut, not any lack of diversity in the voting body.
Deadline was confused by the inept diversity score it assigned to its own metrics, even though there is enough diversity within the voting body.
How is it possible that HFPA could ignore the critically acclaimed movie at 94% fresh from Rotten Tomatoes, despite increasing its racial/ethnic membership to more than 51%?
Perhaps art is subjective and voters have their own opinions about the best films.
Deadline’s own readers mocked the aggressive push to promote diversity above all else. Here’s just one example:
These artificial moral outrages, quotas, and other illegalities are worse than the Hayes code. These are utterly ignored [the] It is a fact that the HFPA includes international critics from international markets. The three examples (BP2WF and Woman King) are woefully below international vs domestic.
Variety blasted the Globes In a separate category, it was noted that the Best Director nominees in both categories did not include a female nominee.
James Cameron (All-male nominee) is one of the nominated directors.“Avatar: The Way of Water”), The Daniels (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Baz Luhrmann (“Elvis”Martin McDonagh (“The Banshees of Inisherin”Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans”).
That’s some pretty heady competition in that category. Cameron and Spielberg are icons in their respective fields, having made some of the most loved movies of the new era. “Jaws” To “Terminator.”
TheWrap is similar weighed in on the documentary films This year, Oscar glory is available. The outlet crunched diversity numbers for each category.
The list includes eight films directed by women and four films that were directed by people from color.
The Oscar system passed all tests. At least for now.
They also cheerlead actors who transform their awards show moments in to progressive pep rallies. Rather than report on Leonardo DiCaprio’s 2016 climate change speech for winning the Best Actor award for “The Revenant” Media outlets attach phrases to encourage quiet listening in neutral ways.
