Mike Johnson’s job could be saved if he listens to Democrats

A Group of ⁣House Democrats Offer Support to House⁤ Speaker Mike Johnson Amid GOP Tensions

A⁢ group of House Democrats are stepping forward ⁢to assist House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) in maintaining his position, should GOP hardliners⁤ attempt to remove him.

These House conservatives are urging Johnson to abandon the $1.66‍ trillion spending deal with Senate Democrats. However,⁢ the speaker⁢ has made it clear that he intends to stick with the deal in‌ order to prevent a partial government shutdown ‍next week.

The proposed bill includes an ‌additional $69 billion⁢ in non-defense spending, which was part ⁤of a deal struck between former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden last year. Republican hardliners‌ have demanded that Johnson renegotiate several terms of the deal, threatening to oust him if he fails to‍ comply.

However, some Democrats⁢ are offering their support to Johnson if ‌he reaches out to House⁤ Minority Leader Hakeem ‍Jeffries (D-NY) to negotiate an agreement that gives House Democrats a stronger voice in the chamber.

“Just like I told McCarthy: ‌Talk to Hakeem, and there ‍are some of‌ us that can support⁣ you,” said Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), per the Hill.⁢ “I’ll say the same ⁢thing⁢ [to Johnson].”

Another centrist Democrat, ⁤who⁣ wishes ⁣to⁣ remain anonymous, and is⁣ reportedly facing a challenging reelection this year, ‍expressed a willingness⁣ to support Johnson despite their personal reservations.

“I probably would [support Johnson],” the Democrat‍ said. “We can’t⁤ do another three-week ⁤standstill. As it is, ‍we’ve got nothing done in the 118th Congress. Look, he’s not‍ my favorite person⁢ in the world, but on the other hand, it’s a⁣ terrible and tough job in this Congress.”

All House Democrats voted to ⁤remove McCarthy from the speakership ‍in October, joining a group‌ of eight House ⁣Republicans led by Rep.⁢ Matt Gaetz (R-FL). This historic ousting caused a three-week ‍legislative halt as Congress scrambled to find a new Republican leader. ‍After multiple unsuccessful attempts by various candidates, Johnson⁢ was unanimously elected by ‍House Republicans.

As tensions escalate between Johnson and a small faction of House Republicans, centrist Democrats are willing⁢ to offer their support under certain conditions.

“We wouldn’t be offering it⁤ as an act of charity,” retiring Rep. Dan Kildee⁢ (D-MI) reportedly said. “We would say, ‘Look, if you need Democrats to‍ govern, then you’re going to have to take Democratic ‌input.’”
