How do you know if you’re having a stroke? Well, you’ll lose control of half of your face, get blurry vision, and experience a blinding headache. Oh, and your speech will come out garbled as you’re stumbling around trying to tell someone about it.
Surprisingly, that’s how many people learn they have hypertension: by stroking out or even having a heart attack. You may not notice the signs of high blood pressure until it is too late. That’s why your doctor and even your dentist will place a blood pressure monitor on you right away.
Researchers are searching for drug solutions because one in three people will be affected by high blood pressure and 25% will suffer from strokes. But the answer may be right there in the supermarket’s produce section.
The Blueberry Study
Researchers collected 40 people and asked them to consume 200g of wild blueberries each day (blended into smoothies) or control blueberry drinks for one month.
Here’s what happened: The subjects consuming blueberries reduced their blood pressure by 5mmHg, which is about what a prescription hypertension drug can do. It was found that blood vessel function was better and cardiovascular disease Risk factors declined. The results of the control group were not different.
One researcher pointed out that “If the changes we saw in blood vessel function after eating blueberries every day could be sustained for a person’s whole life, it could reduce their risk of developing cardiovascular disease by up to 20%.”
Why blueberries? Because anthocyanins, that’s why. These are the extremely healthy plant flavonoids which give certain foods their indigo, red or blue colors.
How to Use This Information
Wild blueberries can be consumed 200g per day. That’s almost two cups, which is probably why they were blended into smoothies for the study. Wild blueberries are smaller due to their lower water content. These blueberries can be thought of as “concentrated” blueberries. They have 33% more antioxidants than regular blueberries.

High blood pressure can be treated by a doctor. This will prevent further damage to your heart and kidneys. Blueberries are not the answer to the number one cause of death.

Let Big Pharma “fix” Your problems. That’s going so well, isn’t it?
Great stuff. Coincidentally I started an experiment 3 nights ago. I’ve had a presciption for Losartan for a while. My systolic was at 140 and my diastolic at 70. Despite taking the medication, there have been no significant changes. I have stopped taking the medication. My blood pressure is now 120/70, with no dizziness. Not sure what that’s all about. For over a year, I have been adding wildblueberries to my shakes. I think the medication was hindering my health. It’s a good thing.
This study is ineffective. N=40 is insufficient statistical power to draw any conclusions. The subjects were not monitored. We don’t know if the subjects ate the blueberries. You don’t know what else they did to affect their blood pressure. You are admitting that other foods can have an impact on blood pressure by claiming blueberries decreased blood pressure. How do you know the subjects with blood pressure decreases didn’t eat another food that affects blood pressure?
I’ll trust the researchers did a good job here (read the full studyIt was thoroughly monitored with four human studies as well as an animal study. They were very excited about the results.
I also tried it when I found the study. It went quickly from being borderline to normal.

Taken together, our data demonstrate that blueberries not only acutely and transiently improve endothelial function but also induce sustained improvement in endothelial function and systolic BP after repetitive consumption for 1 month.”
You can read the article for free. The section titled “Recommendations” is highly recommended. “power analysis” You can address your statistical power concerns. Keep in mind that statistical power does not depend on the sample size, but also on expected effect sizes. The sample size N=40 is slightly heavier because it included multiple data points (repeated measures) from each participant. Four human studies were conducted, including one registered randomized control trial. To address your subject control/experimental concern, I recommend that you read the methods of this study. To make a better decision, you can look at all four human studies as well as the one animal study. This will allow you to synthesize the important takeaways and draw a wider picture of the results. While I am not recommending this study nor am I familiar with the literature, I want to highlight the fact that the researchers address all your concerns in the entire article. It is up to you to decide how well they address your concerns.
