Another Biden administration official has officially announced they are stepping down from their role.
On Monday, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge announced she will be stepping away from her cabinet position later this month, which makes it the second cabinet secretary to do so during the Biden administration.
“It has always been my belief that government can and should work for the people. For the last three years, I have fully embraced HUD’s mission to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all,” Fudge said in a statement on Monday. “The people HUD serves are those who are often left out and left behind. These are my people. They serve as my motivation for everything we have been able to accomplish.”
Fudge stated her resignation will be effective March 22nd.
“From her time as a mayor, to her years as a fierce advocate in the U.S. House of Representatives, Marcia’s vision, passion, and focus on increasing economic opportunity have been assets to our country. I’m grateful for all of her contributions toward a housing system that works for all Americans, and I wish her well in her next chapter,” President Joe Biden wrote in a statement on her departure.
The Biden administration official also told USA Today she has plans to return to her home in Ohio.
“When you’re in these kinds of roles you go out when you’re on top and I believe that’s where we are,” Fudge told USA Today.
Fudge served in Congress from November 2008 through March 2021, representing Ohio’s 11th district before she was brought on to lead Biden’s HUD Department.
In a statement on her impending departure, President Joe Biden gave praise to Fudge’s work to help lower housing costs and boost supply.
“I’m grateful for all of her contributions toward a housing system that works for all Americans,” Biden said.
It’s still unclear when the Senate will fill the seat once Fudge leaves.

What qualities and qualifications should the Biden administration prioritize in selecting a successor to Secretary Marcia Fudge to ensure the continuation of the mission to create inclusive communities and affordable housing?

On Monday, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Marcia Fudge announced she will be stepping away from her cabinet position later this month, which makes it the second cabinet secretary to do so during the Biden administration.

The announcement of Fudge’s resignation comes at a time when the Biden administration is facing challenges in addressing the housing crisis and racial wealth divide. Fudge’s departure will leave a gap in the leadership of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, which plays a crucial role in ensuring affordable housing and promoting equitable and inclusive communities.
As Fudge steps away from her role, the Biden administration will need to find a qualified successor who is committed to continuing the mission of creating strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality affordable homes for all. This appointment will be vital in addressing the pressing housing issues facing the nation and advancing economic opportunity for communities of color.
Fudge’s departure also highlights the turnover within the Biden administration, with multiple key officials stepping down within the first months of the presidency. While such changes are not uncommon in political administrations, they do pose challenges in maintaining consistency and implementing long-term policies.
The impact of Fudge’s leadership and contributions during her tenure as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development will be evaluated and analyzed by experts and scholars in the coming years. Her departure marks a significant transition in the administration’s approach to housing policy and the further development of strategies to narrow the racial wealth divide.
Ultimately, the focus should remain on finding a capable successor to continue the important work initiated by Fudge and address the pressing challenges in the housing sector. The Biden administration must prioritize housing affordability, equitable access to housing, and economic opportunity to ensure the well-being and prosperity of all Americans.
