‘Huge Tipping Point’: Trump Allies Sound Off on Possible Indictment
Some of former President Donald Trump’s allies believe that an indictment of him could actually help his bid to re-claim the Oval Office. Jenna Ellis, who represented Trump’s 2020 campaign, called a possible indictment a “huge tipping point and turning point in America” and suggests that it might be a political tactic used to “drain [Trump’s] war chest”. Tesla CEO Elon Musk had previously stated that, if Trump were to be arrested, it could help him win by a landslide. Republican members, such as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and former White House spokesman Hogan Gidley, also agree that Trump’s following will rally in support of him if he is falsely accused. Nevertheless, a conviction would be a lot harder, according to Texas GOP strategist Brendan Steinhauser.
The probe by the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office involves a $130,000 hush money payment to adult actress Stormy Daniels. Despite an indictment being very likely, a conviction would be difficult due to the high standard required; specifically, that Donald Trump had “intended to commit a crime,” Steinhauser explained.
Trump had urged his supporters to protest and “take our nation back” via social media, which received criticism for potential incitement of violence. Ellis, while agreeing that this was probably not the “wisest move”, reasoned that “protesting in the streets is not a responsible response.” Steinhauser stated that another January 6 type event would hurt Trump’s cause, while peaceful protests could help rally Republican support for the belief that the prosecution is politically charged.
