Human trafficking survivor hails Sound of Freedom for spotlighting top human rights concern.
A Survivor’s Praise for Sound of Freedom: Shedding Light on the No. 1 Human Rights Issue
A survivor of human trafficking has praised Sound of Freedom for raising awareness of the human rights issue, calling human trafficking the “No. 1 human rights issue in the world.”
Bishop Donna Hubbard’s praise for the film comes as the film is finishing its fourth weekend at the box office, where it has nearly made $150 million since its release on July 4. Hubbard is the founder of the Woman at the Well Transition Center, which is a registered non-profit ministry that gives training, counseling, and services to both formerly incarcerated women and women who are rescued from human trafficking, according to the Global Initiative.

“It wasn’t unexpected that this movie would become a hit, but let me start by saying that the trafficking of people of color did not just begin with the human trafficking movement so that we need to understand that it was beyond our comprehension to think about trafficking children,” Hubbard said during an appearance on Fox News. “However, trafficking people of color from around the world, whether it was the Caribbean or Africa, has happened for many, many years, long before this. But the fact that human trafficking now knows no gender, no age, no ethnicity, it is a part of our, it is, like I said, the No. 1 human rights issue.”
Hubbard added that the movie brings the topic of human trafficking “to the forefront of the conversation worldwide,” and that the film’s success is not surprising due to how people are seeing human trafficking “as more than just sexual exploitation.”
In regards to what can be done to combat human trafficking, Hubbard suggested that people need to look at what social media platforms are being used by human traffickers “to entice and recruit children.” Hubbard also asked that lawmakers not criminalize victims of human trafficking, as “so often the victims are criminalized themselves.”
Sound of Freedom, a film that details the true story of how former Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard quit his DHS job and risked his life to save children from sex slavery, is projected to make $12,409,300 at the box office this weekend, bringing its total so far to over $148 million, according to an Angel Studios statement sent to the Washington Examiner.

“Throughout our fourth weekend, audiences have continued to show up and support Sound of Freedom, and our theatrical partners have given us ample real estate to meet that continued demand,” said Brandon Purdie, Head of Theatrical Distribution at Angel Studios. “We now know that this incredible film is going to surpass the $150 million mark domestically, and we’re strongly positioned to go well past that.”
On Wednesday, it was announced that Sound of Freedom will be released in other countries beyond the United States and Canada starting next month. The film’s international rollout will start with South Africa on Aug. 18, continuing with Australia and New Zealand on Aug. 24.
