Robinson, who dedicated his entire career (1955-1977) to the Baltimore Orioles, achieved an extraordinary feat of winning 16 consecutive Gold Gloves from 1960 to 1975. His exceptional skills on the field made him a local hero and helped the Orioles secure World Series victories in 1966 and 1970.
In addition to his defensive prowess, Robinson showcased his offensive abilities by winning the 1964 American League MVP with a .317 batting average and 118 RBIs. He further solidified his MVP status in the 1970 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, hitting .429 with two home runs. Throughout his career, Robinson amassed an impressive 2,848 hits, just shy of 3,000, along with 268 home runs and 1,357 RBIs. He also made appearances in 18 All-Star Games.
However, it was Robinson’s humility and graciousness that endeared him to fans and fellow players alike. His remarkable defensive skills were so impeccable that they were never a topic of negotiation during contract discussions. General Manager Harry Dalton once explained, “How could I bring up defense? How could I debate perfection?”
Robinson’s impact extended beyond the baseball diamond. He was known for his genuine kindness and respect both on and off the field. Fellow Orioles Hall of Famer Jim Palmer fondly remembered him as a “great player, great guy on the field, great guy off.” Robinson’s induction into the Hall of Fame in 1983 drew an unprecedented crowd of 12,000 people, a testament to the love and admiration Baltimore had for him.
