Devon Archer aids Comer in Burisma testimony amid Hunter Biden probe.
Hunter Biden Business Partner Misses Subpoena Deadline
Hunter Biden’s business partner and fellow Burisma board member, Devon Archer, will not meet the initial subpoena deadline to appear before Congress. However, Republicans are confident that he will soon sit down for questioning.
Rep. James Comer, the House Oversight Committee chairman, issued a subpoena for Archer to appear for a transcribed interview as part of the panel’s ongoing investigation into the Biden family finances. The committee believes that Archer possesses information relevant to its investigation.
Confident in Finding Another Date
An aide for the Oversight Committee stated that the deposition would not be happening on Friday but assured that the committee is in contact with Archer’s attorney to schedule another day for his appearance. The committee is confident that another date will be found, and Archer not showing up on Friday is not considered a violation of the subpoena.
Archer, who previously worked with Hunter Biden for the Rosemont Seneca Partners investment firm, was convicted in 2018 for his involvement in a fraudulent bond scheme. He was sentenced to just over a year in prison in February 2022.
Despite losing his appeal, Archer’s lawyer maintains his client’s innocence. The Supreme Court also rejected another appeal from Archer in November 2021.
Significance of Archer’s Testimony
Comer’s subpoena letter to Archer’s lawyer emphasized the importance of Archer’s testimony. The committee believes that Archer played a significant role in the Biden family’s business deals abroad, including China, Russia, and Ukraine. Additionally, Archer had multiple meetings with then-Vice President Biden, including in the White House, while conducting these overseas business deals.
The call for testimony comes as the Oversight Committee focuses on allegations made by a confidential FBI informant. The informant claimed that the Ukrainian owner of Burisma funneled money to both Joe Biden and Hunter Biden in an alleged bribery scheme.
Continued Investigation into Hunter Biden’s Dealings
Comer has been actively investigating Hunter Biden’s dealings with Archer. He has demanded records from Hunter Biden and the president’s brother, James, related to their overseas dealings with Chinese intelligence-linked businessmen. Comer has also requested communications between Hunter Biden and Archer.
The Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, eventually allowed Comer to view suspicious transaction reports related to Hunter Biden after initial resistance.
Republicans have long contended that Hunter Biden’s business dealings in Ukraine and China may involve crimes related to foreign lobbying or money laundering. Recent reports suggest that the focus of the investigation may have shifted to potential tax fraud and lying on a federal gun form by Hunter Biden.
Archer’s involvement in the investigation is significant, as highlighted in a joint report released by Senators Grassley and Johnson in 2020. The report focused on then-Vice President Biden’s role in Ukraine policy while Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma.
