Raskin criticizes Hunter Biden probe as a fruitless pursuit.
House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Accuses Republicans of Pursuing Nonexistent Crimes
In a fiery opening statement at a congressional hearing on Wednesday, House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin (D-MD) accused Republicans of relentlessly pursuing nonexistent crimes. Raskin claimed that the Republicans had presented faulty evidence in their investigation of the Biden family’s business dealings and President Joe Biden’s alleged involvement.
The Theater of the Absurd
Raskin described the Republicans’ quest as an ”Inspector Clouseau-style” endeavor that has turned the committee into a theater of the absurd. He characterized it as an exercise in futility and embarrassment.
A Fugitive Witness
Raskin pointed out that one of the committee’s witnesses, Gal Luft, had recently been federally indicted on multiple charges, including failure to register as a foreign agent and arms trafficking. He emphasized that the Republicans’ “long-promised star witness” turned out to be a fugitive from American justice.
A Letter from Lev Parnas
Raskin then discussed a 10-page letter he and Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) received from Lev Parnas, who had also been federally indicted on several charges in the past. Despite Parnas’s conviction and prison sentence, Raskin summarized the letter during the hearing, which detailed an alleged Trump campaign “crusade” to ”smear” Biden before the 2020 election. Raskin advocated for summoning Parnas as a congressional witness in the Biden inquiry.
Baseless Conspiracy Theories
Raskin challenged the committee Republicans to address the alleged crusade to smear President Biden by promoting baseless conspiracy theories. He accused them of relying on ”failed SARS reports, bank records, [and] form 1023,” the infamous FBI form that contained an allegation of Biden’s involvement in a bribery scheme when he was vice president.
Response from Oversight GOP
An Oversight GOP spokesperson responded to Raskin’s remarks, accusing him of lying about the FD-1023 form and aiding in covering up for the Bidens. The spokesperson emphasized that Raskin had dismissed the form as no longer under federal investigation, but former Attorney General William Barr contradicted this claim, stating that the investigation had been sent to Delaware for further examination.
