Raskin criticizes Hunter Biden probe as a fruitless pursuit.

House ⁢Oversight⁢ Committee Ranking ⁢Member Accuses Republicans‍ of ⁤Pursuing‍ Nonexistent Crimes

In a fiery opening statement at a ⁤congressional hearing on Wednesday, House Oversight Committee ranking member Jamie Raskin‌ (D-MD) accused Republicans of relentlessly ‌pursuing⁣ nonexistent crimes. ‌Raskin claimed⁢ that the Republicans ⁤had ⁣presented faulty evidence⁤ in their⁣ investigation⁤ of the Biden family’s⁢ business dealings and President Joe Biden’s alleged involvement.

The ‍Theater of the Absurd

Raskin described the Republicans’ quest ⁣as‍ an ”Inspector‍ Clouseau-style” endeavor that ‍has turned ‌the ⁤committee into a theater ‍of ‍the absurd. He characterized ⁣it as an exercise in futility and ⁤embarrassment.

A Fugitive Witness

Raskin pointed⁤ out that one of the committee’s witnesses,‌ Gal Luft, had recently been federally indicted on ⁣multiple charges, including‍ failure to register as a foreign⁢ agent ‌and arms⁢ trafficking.‍ He emphasized ⁤that the Republicans’ “long-promised star witness”⁣ turned out to be‍ a ‍fugitive⁢ from American justice.

A Letter from Lev Parnas

Raskin then discussed‌ a ⁤10-page letter he and ‌Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) received from Lev Parnas, who had also been federally indicted on several charges‍ in the past.⁤ Despite Parnas’s conviction and ⁤prison⁢ sentence, Raskin summarized the letter ⁤during the⁤ hearing, ‍which⁤ detailed ‍an alleged Trump ‌campaign “crusade” to ⁤”smear” Biden before the 2020 ‍election. Raskin‍ advocated‌ for summoning Parnas as a ⁤congressional witness ⁤in the Biden ⁢inquiry.

Baseless ‌Conspiracy Theories

Raskin challenged the committee Republicans to address the alleged crusade to smear President⁢ Biden ‌by promoting⁣ baseless ‍conspiracy⁤ theories. He ⁤accused them of ‌relying on ⁤”failed SARS⁣ reports, bank records,‍ [and]⁣ form 1023,” ⁤the ‍infamous ⁣FBI form that contained ‌an allegation of Biden’s involvement in a bribery scheme when he was vice president.

Response⁢ from Oversight GOP

An Oversight GOP spokesperson responded to Raskin’s remarks, accusing him of lying about the ‍FD-1023 form and aiding ⁣in ⁢covering up ⁢for the Bidens. ⁤The spokesperson‌ emphasized that Raskin ⁤had dismissed the form as no longer under federal investigation, but former Attorney General William Barr⁤ contradicted this claim, stating that the investigation had ‍been sent to Delaware for‌ further ⁢examination.
