Hunter Biden’s associate exploited his government position to gain favor at a Latvian bank, where Hunter was vying for a board seat.
Hunter Biden’s Business Partner Used Federal Position to Court Eastern European Company
In a batch of emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, it has been revealed that Hunter Biden’s business partner, Eric Schwerin, used his federal position during the Obama administration to pursue a board seat on an Eastern European company.
Schwerin was appointed to the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad by President Barack Obama in March 2015. This small federal agency, which intersects with U.S. government influence in Eastern Europe and private fundraising, provided Schwerin with the opportunity to present himself as a U.S. official and negotiate with Eastern European countries regarding the preservation of Holocaust-era cemeteries.
Furthermore, Schwerin used his position to raise funds for preservation projects from private businesses and individuals. He even attempted to secure recognition for a Latvian bank on a Commission project, coinciding with Hunter’s pursuit of a board seat on the same company. However, Schwerin abandoned his efforts when he discovered that the bank’s contribution would remain anonymous.
Collusion Between Schwerin and Hunter
According to emails found on Hunter’s abandoned laptop, Schwerin’s appointment to the Commission occurred less than a year after he brought it to Hunter’s attention. In September 2014, Schwerin sent Hunter an article highlighting the Commission’s ability to leverage cooperation from foreign governments.
With his government-issued “Official Passport,” Schwerin traveled to Eastern Europe, a region where his business with Hunter, Rosemont Seneca Partners, heavily relied on political connections. Schwerin’s first official duty involved raising funds for a memorial renovation in Latvia, with the expectation that Norvik Bank, in which Hunter’s business partner Devon Archer was a shareholder, would contribute.
However, when the Latvian representative explained that the plaque’s language could not be changed due to political reasons, Schwerin suggested that the donation might be contingent on public recognition for the donor. Despite these efforts, Norvik Bank never received credit for its contribution.
Hunter’s Involvement and Continued Pursuit of Business Opportunities
Hunter actively participated in Schwerin’s work for the Commission, even assisting in editing Schwerin’s speech for a ceremony in Latvia. Emails exchanged during this time show Hunter’s ongoing interest in business opportunities in Latvia, including seeking a board appointment from Latvian oligarch Valeri Belokon.
Despite the Commission’s reputation for corruption, Schwerin was reappointed by Obama in January 2017. He resigned in September 2019 without providing an explanation.
The Commission’s refusal to release records until faced with litigation suggests a violation of the Freedom of Information Act. The Biden administration recently appointed one of the president’s political donors, who also purchased Hunter’s artwork, to the same Commission.
It is clear that Schwerin’s federal position provided him with significant advantages in pursuing business opportunities in Eastern Europe, particularly in collaboration with Hunter Biden. The extent of their influence and connections raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and the ethical implications of their actions.
