Robert Kennedy Jr. Reveals the Reason Behind His Raspy Voice
During a captivating town hall event with voters, Democratic presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. opened up about the unique quality of his voice. He attributed it to a neurological condition called spasmodic dysphonia.
Host Elizabeth Vargas kicked off the evening by asking Kennedy to explain the reason behind his raspy voice. Kennedy candidly shared that the degeneration of his vocal cords began in the mid-1990s.
“I used to have a remarkably strong voice until I turned 46,” Kennedy revealed. “It was so powerful that I could address large crowds without any amplification, which was crucial since public speaking was a significant part of my income.”
However, Kennedy’s voice deteriorated rapidly, and in 1996, at the age of 42, he was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia. This neurological disease caused his voice to tremble uncontrollably.
Initially, Kennedy was unaware of what was happening to his voice. It was only after receiving letters from people who had heard him speak that he learned about spasmodic dysphonia. Seeking medical advice, he consulted with a renowned doctor who confirmed the diagnosis.
“I believe this condition makes it challenging for people to listen to me. In fact, I cannot bear to listen to myself on TV. I will never watch this broadcast,” Kennedy admitted. “So, I apologize to all of you for having to endure my voice.”

Fortunately, Kennedy shared that a recent surgical procedure he underwent in Japan significantly improved his voice. He assured the audience that his voice was even worse before the surgery.
According to Johns Hopkins, spasmodic dysphonia causes involuntary spasms in the muscles of the voice box or larynx, resulting in a strained or strangled sound.
Despite the challenges with his voice, Kennedy’s message is resonating with Democrats. A majority of them do not want President Joe Biden to run for re-election in 2024. In the Democratic primary, Kennedy is currently polling at around 15 percent, according to the Real Clear Politics average of polls.
