New women’s pro hockey league to start in 2024.
A New Era for Women’s Ice Hockey: Unified League to Launch in 2024
Exciting news for ice hockey fans! A new professional women’s ice hockey league is set to launch in January 2024, bringing together the world’s best players in a unified league. This announcement marks the end of a long-standing divide between the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) and the Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), a seven-team league.
The league will receive financial support from Mark Walter, co-owner of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers, and his wife Kemba. Additionally, former tennis great Billie Jean King will be among the board members, adding her expertise to the league’s development.
“I have always believed that professional sports should bring the highest levels of performance and organization, and this new league will have the backing and resources it needs to represent the very best of women’s hockey,” said Walter.
While specific details about the new league, such as the number of teams and cities involved, have not been disclosed yet, it is clear that the league aims to showcase the top talent in women’s hockey. The league has acquired assets from the PHF and has spent months negotiating a collective bargaining agreement with the PWHPA.
“This is an extraordinary opportunity to advance women’s sports,” said King, a lifelong advocate for gender equality. “I have no doubt that this league can capture the imagination of fans and inspire a new generation of players.”
The league’s establishment follows the rebranding of the National Women’s Hockey League to the PHF in 2021. The PWHPA, formed in 2019 after the Canadian Women’s Hockey League disbanded, has been organizing showcase events to draw attention to the lack of a sustainable professional hockey league for women.
“I am extremely proud of our PWHPA group, which has remained committed to our vision and steadfast in our efforts to change the landscape of women’s professional hockey forever,” said PWHPA member and Olympic gold medalist Kendall Coyne Schofield. “Over the past four years, we have worked tirelessly to close the gap on what young girls and boys could dream to become in this sport.”
The deal has also caught the attention of the National Hockey League (NHL), which has expressed interest in collaborating with the unified group to further grow the women’s game.
