Tom Homan denies ICE will ‘raid’ job sites of illegal immigrants in DC on first days
EXCLUSIVE — President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan, denied a media report that said the transition team plans to carry out worksite raids targeting illegal immigrants in Washington, D.C., in the days following the inauguration.
In a phone call with the Washington Examiner on Thursday, Homan said no such plans or talk of plans had been discussed and that he would be privy to that information given his role overseeing all immigration and border-related policy implementations.
“I can tell you we’ve got no plans for that. I talked to the incoming team. No one knows anything about this,” said Homan when asked about an NBC News report that alleged a “high-profile raid” was in the plans for the initial days of Trump’s second term.
The Trump administration plans to deport criminal illegal immigrants and anyone who an immigration judge has already ordered to be removed from the country, totaling a million to 2 million people. Under the Biden administration, the Department of Homeland Security started prioritizing people with serious criminal convictions as opposed to focusing on employers who have illegal immigrants on the books.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a DHS agency, employs 7,000 officers who conduct 250,000 deportations a year, according to the agency. If Trump’s administration wanted to quadruple this number, as Trump has promised, training academies would likely be unable to handle a deluge of new hires.
Trump nominated Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) to serve as DHS secretary in his second administration a week after he won the election.
He also announced immigration hawks Stephen Miller and Homan for key roles in the White House to carry out the deportation of illegal immigrants and lead border policy. Miller will be Trump’s deputy chief for policy. Unlike Noem, Miller and Homan will not need to be confirmed by the Senate.
Homan told the Washington Examiner in mid-December that there would be “a lot of collateral arrests” in addition to those aforementioned — meaning illegal immigrant children and family members found living with criminals would also be swept up and deported.
“In sanctuary cities, expect a lot of collateral arrests,” Homan said. “I mean, not priority criminal arrests. We can’t get the bad guy in jail. That means we have to go into the communities and find them, and there may be others. We expect a lot of collateral arrests.”
The Trump transition team, DHS, ICE, and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser did not respond to requests for comment.
