Ilhan Omar slams McCarthy as a ‘spiteful coward’ during Schiff censure resolution reading.
Rep. Ilhan Omar Calls House Speaker Kevin McCarthy a “Spiteful Coward”
During a House vote on Wednesday evening, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) didn’t hold back in expressing her frustration with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). In a heated moment, she referred to him as a “spiteful coward.” This exchange came after Republicans successfully censured Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), a move that Democrats strongly opposed.
Democrats Condemn House Republicans
As McCarthy attempted to read the censure resolution, Democrats on the House floor gathered to denounce House Republicans, labeling them as “shameful” and a “disgrace.” Omar also criticized McCarthy for what she deemed as “weak leadership.”
Glenn Youngkin’s Unforgettable Night
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Glenn Youngkin had a night to remember. The House voted 213-209 to condemn Schiff over allegations of abusing the trust of his constituents by promoting the theory of Trump-Russia collusion in the 2016 election. This marked the second attempt by House Republicans to censure Schiff.
Despite the censure being a symbolic gesture without direct consequences, Schiff took it as a “badge of honor.” He saw it as a sign that his efforts to expose corruption and lead the first bipartisan vote to remove a president were effective.
Chaos on the House Floor
Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), who voted against the censure, described the night as chaotic on both sides of the political aisle. She expressed concern that the chaos and shouting on the House floor sent a negative message to the American people, overshadowing the serious business at hand.
Porter notably did not stand with her fellow House Democrats in defending Schiff during the censure vote.

The Symbolic Nature of a Censure Vote
It’s important to note that a censure vote does not remove a lawmaker from office or impose any real punishment. Instead, it serves as a symbolic expression of dissatisfaction with a lawmaker’s voting record or personal conduct. However, this move could potentially impact Schiff’s bid to replace the retiring Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) in the Senate, as the matter will now be referred to the Ethics Committee for a full investigation.
