A Chill Hits Chicago as Illegal Immigrants Overstay Their Welcome
A once-warm welcome has turned chilly in Chicago as the city grapples with an overwhelming number of illegal immigrants on its doorstep. Mayor Brandon Johnson’s office recently announced a new policy that will require illegal immigrants staying at city-run shelters to leave after 60 days, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The policy will be implemented in phases, starting with those who arrived last year. A notice on December 4th will target illegal immigrants who arrived prior to August, and on February 1st, another round of notices will be sent to those who checked in by Thursday.
From then on, every new arrival will be given a 60-day window to rely on the city’s support. Those who are removed from shelters will have the option to return to designated city “landing zones” and restart the sheltering process.
“There are three anchors to this new phase in our plan: creating pathways to resettlement, community integration and reunification, creating jobs for Chicagoans in staffing the New Arrivals Mission, and building public infrastructure for the public good,” Mayor Johnson stated in a statement.
He emphasized the importance of treating new neighbors with compassion, as they have the potential to become productive members of the community. “We are addressing the anxiety and fear that people have, whether you are a taxpayer or whether you are someone who is seeking asylum in the city of Chicago,” Johnson said, according to WLS-TV.
However, some City Council members are pushing for a referendum on the city’s sanctuary city status, which was established in 1985 by Mayor Harold Washington, according to Axios. They believe that times have changed and that the city should reconsider its policies in light of the influx of thousands of illegal immigrants.
Despite the challenges, Mayor Johnson affirmed that Chicago will always be a sanctuary city, according to WMAO-TV.

Meanwhile, Democratic Illinois Governor JB Pritzker announced that the state will be cutting rental assistance to illegal immigrants. Assistance will now be limited to three months, with no support available for those arriving in Chicago after Friday.
Despite the adjustments, Mayor Johnson assured that there is no change in the city’s sanctuary city policy, even with over 21,000 illegal immigrants arriving in Chicago in the past year.

The decision to implement a 60-day limit on stays at city-run shelters is seen as a necessary step to manage the increasing number of illegal immigrants in Chicago. Mayor Johnson’s office believes that this policy will create a more efficient and effective system for processing and resettling individuals, while also ensuring that resources are distributed equitably.

The debate surrounding the issue of illegal immigration in Chicago is complex and multi-faceted. On one hand, there is a need to address the concerns and anxieties of residents who feel impacted by the influx of illegal immigrants.
