IL Gov. Pritzker urges Biden to play a bigger role in addressing immigration crisis.
Illinois Governor Urges Biden for More Federal Support in Dealing with Influx of Immigrants
Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) is calling on President Joe Biden to provide additional federal assistance as his state grapples with the arrival of immigrants from the southern border. In a letter addressed to the President, Pritzker highlights the strain that the influx of 15,000 individuals has placed on Illinois and emphasizes the need for immediate aid.
A Humanitarian Crisis Overwhelming Illinois
“But as the numbers being transported to Chicago are accelerating, the humanitarian crisis is overwhelming our ability to provide aid to the refugee population. Unfortunately, the welcome and aid Illinois has been providing to these asylum seekers has not been matched with support by the federal government. Most critically, the federal government’s lack of intervention and coordination at the border has created an untenable situation for Illinois,” Pritzker wrote.
Pritzker also expresses his frustration with his state being “targeted with busloads of asylum seekers by the border politicians” and urges Biden and the federal government to take a more proactive role in addressing the issue.
A Call for Federal Intervention
“For my state which has been targeted with busloads of asylum seekers by the border politicians seeking to increase the partisan divide, this crisis has strained the already stretched human services network we have attempted to rebuild in our recovery from the pandemic,” he wrote.
The Illinois governor emphasizes the need for the Biden administration to actively manage the transportation and destination of asylum seekers, stating that it is unfair for one state to bear the burden while others remain unaffected.
Pritzker outlines several specific demands in his letter, including waiving fees for temporary protected status applications, improving data collection and coordination, expediting employment authorization for immigrants, providing financial support to state and local governments for housing, food, and social services, and approving Medicaid waivers, housing vouchers, and federal coordination and support.
It is worth noting that Texas, under Gov. Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star, has been the primary source of immigrants being sent to Democratic-run jurisdictions, with over 10,700 individuals reportedly sent to Chicago since August 2022. Abbott maintains that these immigrants are voluntarily choosing to travel to Democratic states.

What specific steps does Governor Pritzker propose for the Biden administration to provide immediate financial support and develop comprehensive strategies for addressing the humanitarian crisis in Illinois
Ing and supportive services that we have been able to offer thus far are insufficient to meet the needs of this growing population,” writes Pritzker in the letter.
The governor’s plea for more federal support comes as Illinois, like many other states along the southern border, continues to experience a surge in the number of immigrants seeking refuge in the United States. While the Biden administration has taken steps to address the situation at the border, including expanding the capacity of housing facilities and providing funding for some local governments, Pritzker argues that more needs to be done to provide relief to states like Illinois.
Pritzker points out that, while Illinois has a long history of welcoming immigrants and refugees, the recent influx has put a significant strain on the state’s resources. Services such as healthcare, education, and social support have been stretched thin, and local communities are struggling to meet the needs of both the new arrivals and the existing population.
Furthermore, Pritzker emphasizes the urgent need for additional federal assistance due to the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. As Illinois continues to battle the ongoing health crisis, the influx of immigrants places an additional burden on healthcare systems and increases the risk of spreading the virus. The governor argues that additional federal funding and resources are necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of both the immigrant population and the residents of Illinois.
In his letter, Pritzker calls on President Biden to provide immediate financial support to help Illinois address the humanitarian crisis it is facing. He suggests that funds be allocated to bolster existing support systems, such as healthcare centers and schools, and to provide additional resources for immigration agencies and non-profit organizations working to assist the immigrant population.
Pritzker also urges the Biden administration to work collaboratively with state and local governments to develop comprehensive strategies for addressing the influx of immigrants. He emphasizes the importance of a coordinated effort that takes into account the unique needs and challenges faced by different states, and acknowledges that a one-size-fits-all approach may not be effective in this situation.
Lastly, Pritzker highlights the significance of comprehensive immigration reform in addressing the root causes of the influx of immigrants. He argues that a long-term solution must include measures to address the economic, social, and political factors that drive individuals to seek refuge in the United States. By tackling these issues at their source, Pritzker believes that it will be possible to alleviate the pressure on states like Illinois and create a more humane and effective immigration system.
In conclusion, Governor Pritzker’s appeal for more federal support in dealing with the influx of immigrants in Illinois underscores the urgent need for assistance in addressing this humanitarian crisis. As the number of immigrants seeking refuge in the United States continues to rise, it is essential for the federal government to step up its efforts to alleviate the strain on states and provide the necessary resources to ensure the safety and well-being of both the immigrant population and the residents of Illinois. Through collaboration between federal, state, and local governments, comprehensive strategies can be developed to address the immediate needs of the immigrant population and work towards long-term solutions for immigration reform.
