Illinois Governor approves law enabling foreigners to serve as police officers.
Governor J.B. Pritzker Signs Bill Allowing Foreign Nationals to Become Police Officers in Illinois
Governor J.B. Pritzker (D-IL) has made a significant move by signing a bill on Friday that will now allow foreign nationals in the state to become police officers. This decision comes amidst a wave of controversy and opposition from police groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police. The bill was one of 130 bills signed by Pritzker on Friday, and it will take effect immediately.
The New Law: HB3751
The law, known as HB3751, states that foreign nationals who are legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law or those who have had immigration action deferred by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services through the DACA process can now apply to become police officers in the state of Illinois.
This move has sparked intense debate and criticism. The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) strongly condemned the bill earlier this year, expressing concerns about the potential crisis of confidence in law enforcement. They questioned the message this legislation sends when it allows individuals without legal status to enforce our laws.
Opposing Views
During the debate on the bill, Illinois state Sen. Chapin Rose (R) argued that allowing non-citizens to arrest American citizens would be a fundamental breach of democracy. He firmly stated that it is a fundamentally bad idea, regardless of where the individual is from.
Police Officer Shortages in Illinois
Illinois has been grappling with shortages of police officers, particularly in major metro areas like Chicago. These shortages have been exacerbated by policies pursued by the state and city that are largely opposed by the police. This new law allowing foreign nationals to become police officers may be seen as an attempt to address these shortages.
Controversial Bills Signed by Governor Pritzker
In addition to the bill allowing foreign nationals to become police officers, Governor Pritzker signed several other controversial bills. One of these bills requires state agencies to add “non-binary” or “gender non-conforming” categories to employment reports. Another bill targets crisis pregnancy centers, allowing the attorney general to investigate cases of alleged consumer fraud against centers accused of deceptive practices.
The Thomas More Society, a conservative law firm, has already filed a lawsuit against the law targeting crisis pregnancy centers. They argue that it is an attempt to silence pro-life speech under the guise of consumer protection.
