Illinois school seeks sponsor for ‘Diversity’ Club, excluding students unhappy with trans bathroom policy.
A Teacher’s Controversial Actions at a High School
A teacher at a high school recently made headlines for attempting to exclude students who disagreed with the school’s transgender bathroom policy from attending meetings of the “Diversity” club.
According to emails obtained by Parents Defending Education and shared with The Daily Wire, a teacher and advisor to the school’s “Diversity” club at Waterloo High School in Illinois expressed frustration with critics of the school’s bathroom policy and even suggested placing tampons in boy’s bathrooms.
The controversy arose when students who felt uncomfortable sharing bathrooms with students of the opposite sex chose to use a private bathroom provided by the school. Waterloo High School launched an investigation into these students, as previously reported by The Daily Wire.
In an email to a group of GSA Illinois advisors, the advisor of the Waterloo “Diversity” club wrote, “Usually, our meetings are open. Unfortunately, some of the main players who are in favor of keeping transgender students out of the bathrooms are students who have been coming to meetings under the guise of support for our queer kids.”
The teacher sought advice on how to handle the situation, asking, “Do any of you have experience with monitoring who can and who cannot attend meetings?”
A faculty member from the Champaign School District responded, suggesting that the club establish guidelines to remove students or close meetings. They advised, “Just say to non-normal attenders, ’We are continuing a project/working on an initiative/Planning for something with our current members only today. So sorry. If you are interested in other meetings, I’d be glad to give you a calendar of open meetings!'”
The controversy surrounding the “Diversity” club at Waterloo High School has sparked a larger debate about inclusivity and the role of schools in promoting diversity. According to the school’s website, the club aims to promote diversity and acceptance within the student and faculty population.
Superintendent Brian Charron clarified that the district only removes students from clubs when they violate school rules and expectations. He also confirmed that the previous sponsor of the club, Maggie Partipilo, is no longer in that role.
The situation at Waterloo High School has raised concerns about political activism within schools and the potential for indoctrination. Parents Defending Education Senior Advisor Michele Exner expressed her concerns, stating, “Political activists masquerading as school staff continue to use their official, taxpayer-funded positions to push their ideology on children, train them to keep information away from their parents, and alienate students who do not buy into their agenda.”

Additional emails between Waterloo GSA advisors reveal discussions on complying with state laws regarding tampons in male restrooms, handling students’ preferred pronouns, and conducting surveys about pronouns in front of parents.
How can educators create a safe space for marginalized students to share their experiences and be supported?
Urposefully developing a plan to create a safe space for our marginalized students to share their experiences and be supported. This space is designed for individuals who genuinely support and understand the issues faced by our queer students. Therefore, we kindly request that those who have opposing views refrain from attending our meetings.'”
While it is understandable that the teacher and advisor may have been frustrated with the critics of the school’s bathroom policy, their proposed exclusionary actions raise concerns about their ability to promote diversity and inclusion. As educators, it is vital to foster an environment where different opinions and perspectives are respected.
Schools are meant to be places where students can learn, grow, and engage in meaningful discussions. By excluding students who hold opposing views, we are hindering their ability to learn from one another and develop critical thinking skills. It is through respectful dialogue and debate that students can expand their understanding of complex issues and form their own opinions.
Furthermore, the suggestion of placing tampons in boy’s bathrooms as a means of provoking further debate and discomfort is inappropriate. It not only trivializes the experiences of transgender individuals but also creates an antagonistic atmosphere that is detrimental to the wellbeing of all students.
As teachers, we have a responsibility to create inclusive spaces where all students feel valued and respected. This includes providing opportunities for students to express their opinions and engage in healthy discussions. Excluding students based on their beliefs or attempting to provoke controversy does not align with this goal.
Instead of excluding students, the teacher and advisor should seize this opportunity to facilitate a dialogue that encourages understanding and empathy. By organizing open forums or moderated debates, the school can create an environment where students with differing views can engage in respectful conversations and learn from one another.
In conclusion, the controversial actions of the teacher and advisor at Waterloo High School undermine the principles of diversity and inclusion. Excluding students based on their beliefs and attempting to provoke controversy does not foster a healthy learning environment. It is crucial that educators uphold their responsibility to create inclusive spaces where all students feel respected and have the opportunity to engage in meaningful dialogue.
As a community, we must work together to foster understanding, empathy, and respect for diverse perspectives. Let us seize this opportunity to promote unity and create an educational environment that truly embraces the values of diversity and inclusion.
