Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz Backs Steve Scalise for Speaker of the House
Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida expressed his support for Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana to replace ousted Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. Despite not voting for McCarthy during a GOP caucus, Gaetz is excited to vote for Scalise and believes he will make a great Speaker. Gaetz initially supported Jordan but now backs Scalise since Jordan lost the internal GOP vote. Gaetz believes both Scalise and Jordan are upgrades over McCarthy.

McCarthy was removed as Speaker of the House after Gaetz led a revolt against him. Gaetz accused McCarthy of failing to fulfill his promises and secure GOP support. Following McCarthy’s removal, both Jordan and Scalise announced their bids for Speaker.
Gaetz stated that he would be honored to vote for either Jordan or Scalise on the House floor. He believes that either candidate would be a significant improvement for the Republican conference.
Despite some criticism that Scalise is similar to McCarthy, Gaetz maintains that Scalise is a better choice.
