IMAX CEO puts Disney on hold, demands ‘Dune 2’ delay for Marvel film.

IMAX CEO Relegates Disney to ‘Backup,’⁢ Won’t Show Marvel Film Unless ‘Dune 2’ Gets Delayed

When the Marvel Cinematic Universe began in 2008 with “Iron Man,” the Walt Disney Company probably couldn’t have imagined the incredible success it‍ would ⁤achieve. Spanning three decades and 32 movies, the MCU has generated billions in revenue from movie tickets, licensing rights, toys,⁤ and more.

Love them or hate them, that’s an impressive feat. Especially considering that Iron Man was not a top-tier hero before the 2008 film. The birth⁣ of the MCU was far from guaranteed ⁢at that time.

However, despite all the financial success and clout Disney has gained, their blockbusters are now being ‍considered “backup” ‌films. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond revealed this during ⁤an‍ earnings call, stating that having a backup film is⁣ “not the worst position to be in the world.”

Gelfond was referring to the ‌upcoming Disney/Marvel movie “The Marvels” and how it may not be shown in IMAX⁢ theaters due to the commitment to⁣ the sequel of the sci-fi epic “Dune.”⁢ While Gelfond praised⁣ “The Marvels,” he made it clear that “Dune: Part ⁤Two” would take precedence at IMAX.

Unfortunately for Disney, Gelfond doesn’t expect “Dune: Part Two” to be delayed, leaving “The Marvels” as a backup option for IMAX.

Disney and Marvel are in desperate need of ⁢a win after a series of⁤ business failures, which‌ have resulted in mass layoffs. Recent disappointments include the poorly received “Haunted Mansion,” the box office flop “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” and the underperforming “Elemental.”

Disney’s situation is further exacerbated by the‍ fact that their parks are‍ also struggling. The only recent success for Disney has been “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” directed by James Gunn, who now oversees DC’s box office rival.

With the⁢ lack‍ of interest ‌in “The Marvels,” Disney is facing a significant crisis in 2023‍ and beyond. Losing out ‌on additional IMAX revenue and being ⁣relegated to the backup position only adds to their challenges.

Disney desperately needs a box office hit to turn their‍ fortunes around. The post IMAX CEO Relegates Disney to ‘Backup,’ Won’t Show Marvel Film Unless ‘Dune⁤ 2’ Gets Delayed appeared first ⁤on The Western Journal.
