Montana GOP prepares to remove three-term Democrat from Senate.
He’s not just your average candidate. Tim Sheehy is a former Navy SEAL combat veteran, a successful entrepreneur, a rancher, and a devoted father. And he’s a conservative in a deep red state.
With his impressive background and the support of the Republican Party, Sheehy seems like the perfect candidate to unseat Sen. Jon Tester, a three-term incumbent Democrat in Montana.
In Montana, nearly half of registered voters are Republicans, with over 20 percent identifying as independents. Democrats make up less than a third of the electorate.
Montana is a Republican stronghold, with the GOP controlling the governor’s office, secretary of state, attorney general, and both chambers of the state legislature. Even Montana’s Congressional representatives are Republicans, including its junior U.S. Senator, Steve Daines, who is actively supporting Sheehy’s campaign.
When Sheehy officially declared his candidacy in June, Daines praised him as the ideal candidate to join him in the Senate. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell also endorsed Sheehy, highlighting his decorated military service and successful business background.
However, not everyone is on board with Sheehy’s candidacy. Rep. Matt Rosendale, who lost to Tester in 2018, criticized the party’s choice and accused Sheehy and Tester of protecting the ”DC cartel.”
Despite the internal party conflict, Sheehy remains focused on challenging the Biden administration and Democratic policies. His campaign has garnered support from key figures like Rep. Ryan Zinke and Gov. Greg Gianforte.
Some Early Stumbles
Sheehy, a decorated veteran and successful businessman, has faced criticism from Rep. Rosendale and others. However, he remains committed to his platform of conservative leadership and common-sense solutions.
With the 2024 elections approaching, Republicans see an opportunity to gain control of the Senate. Montana, with its competitive race between Sheehy and Tester, plays a crucial role in their aspirations.
Tester, a moderate Democrat with strong support among Montana voters, has defied the odds in previous elections. Despite the state’s Republican lean, he has managed to secure victories with the backing of a significant portion of Trump supporters.
While the race is considered a toss-up by election ratings services, Sheehy faces an uphill battle. Tester has a substantial campaign war chest and the support of Democrats fighting to retain the seat.
As the primary election approaches, Sheehy remains focused on challenging the Biden administration and presenting himself as a fresh face in politics. Only time will tell if his message resonates with Montana voters.
