Afghan interpreter, who survived with US Army, dies tragically in encounter with DC youth.
An Afghan Interpreter Who Served Alongside US Army in Afghanistan is Tragically Murdered in Washington
An Afghan national who bravely served alongside the U.S. military as an interpreter and escaped with his family during the chaotic exit from Afghanistan two years ago was tragically murdered in Washington this week.
Nasrat Ahmad Yar, a 31-year-old father of four, dedicated his life to serving the United States during the war, only to lose his life in the nation’s capital, a city that has been plagued by rising crime rates under the leadership of soft-on-crime Democrats.
According to WUSA-TV in D.C., Yar was out with his friends on Sunday night when his wife asked him to come home. Despite the request, Yar, who worked as a Lyft driver, decided to continue working to support his family. Tragically, he was shot in his car just after midnight on Monday morning and did not survive his injuries.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Yar’s family, which has already surpassed its goal of $75,000 thanks to the generosity of nearly 2,000 donors.
Yar served as an interpreter for Army Special Forces troops for over a decade in Afghanistan. He leaves behind four children, ranging in age from 15 months to 13 years old.
Yar’s tragic murder highlights the dangers he faced both in Afghanistan and in the United States. He relocated his family from Kabul to Philadelphia in 2021 after being robbed at gunpoint. However, even in the D.C. suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, he was not safe from the violence that ultimately took his life.

Retired Lt. Col. Matthew Butler, who served alongside Yar, spoke highly of him in an interview with WUSA. Butler emphasized that Yar had given more to his country than most, and it is heartbreaking that he experienced such tragedy in the United States.
The suspects in Yar’s murder were captured on surveillance camera, with the footage showing four young males running after a gunshot was heard. One of the suspects can be heard saying, “You just killed him!” while another claims, “He was reaching, bro.”
Despite strict gun laws in the city, the suspects, described as “four boys” by WUSA, were in possession of a firearm. This tragic incident highlights the failure of current gun laws to prevent such violence.
Yar’s murder is a devastating reminder of the consequences of the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and the rising crime rates in cities like Washington, D.C. The loss of Yar’s life has left his children without a father and his wife as a widow.
Police are actively seeking the suspects and offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Anyone with information is urged to call 202-727-9099.
