A top-ranking member of the Islamic State group was killed in Syria, thanks to a drone strike carried out by the American-led coalition. The jihadist leader’s name was Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri.

The United States Central Command reported that al-Jabouri’s death would “temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plot external attacks.”

“U.S. Central Command forces conducted a unilateral strike in northwest Syria killing Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri, an ISIS senior leader, on April 3rd,” said General Michael “Erik” Kurilla, CENTCOM Commander.

According to CENTCOM, al-Jabouri was responsible for plotting ISIS attacks into Europe and leading ISIS operations in Turkey. He was discovered and tracked by the U.S. military in coordination with the Syrian Democratic Forces for months before the drone strike attack located near the rebel-held village of Kefteen in Ad Dana.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that only one person was killed in the strike, while the Syrian Civil Defense, better known as “the White Helmets,” said they had transported al-Jabouri from the area but he later died from his injuries.

No civilians were injured or killed in this U.S.-led drone strike, which is the latest in a series of successful attacks against al Qaeda-linked militants and top leaders of ISIS in Syria since 2019. Other ISIS leaders that have been killed include the group’s founder, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (2019), and his successor, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, (2022), who were both eliminated in other drone strikes. Reports indicate that the name “al-Qurayshi” is an assumed name these leaders use to claim descent from the tribe to which Islam’s Prophet Muhammad belonged, which was Quraish.
