Hamas sends Israel list of hostages to be freed on Saturday
Israel Receives List of Hostages to be Freed from Gaza
Gaza/Jerusalem—Exciting news emerged as Israel received a list of hostages set to be freed from Gaza on Saturday by Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. This comes after the release of 24 hostages during the first day of a planned four-day truce on Friday.
Israeli security officials are currently reviewing the list, according to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The government has made a commitment to work towards the release of all hostages taken by Hamas in an attack on Israel on Oct. 7.
The released hostages, including Israeli women and children and Thai farm workers, were transferred out of Gaza and handed over to Egyptian authorities at the Rafah border crossing. Accompanied by eight staff members of the International Committee of the Red Cross in a four-car convoy, they were then taken to Israel for medical checks and reunions with relatives.
Qatar, acting as the mediator for the truce deal, reported that 13 Israelis, some with dual nationality, along with 10 Thais and a Filipino, were released. These individuals were farm workers employed in southern Israel when they were taken hostage. Additionally, 39 Palestinian women and children detainees were released from Israeli jails.
The Israeli hostages freed included four children accompanied by four family members, as well as five elderly women.
Mixed Emotions in Israel
The families of the hostages expressed mixed emotions, with concerns for those left behind. Shelly Shem Tov, the mother of Omer Shem Tov, 21, shared her feelings in an interview with Israel’s Channel 12. Although her son was not among those released on Friday, she expressed excitement for the families who would be reunited while also feeling jealous and sad that her son was still not coming home.
According to Israeli tallies, the October attack by Hamas fighters resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the capture of approximately 240 hostages.
Since then, Israel has launched a series of bombings on the Hamas-ruled enclave, resulting in the deaths of around 14,000 Gazans, with approximately 40 percent of them being children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza. These numbers have not been independently verified and are believed to include Palestinian civilians killed by errant rockets launched by terror groups, as well as Palestinian terrorists killed by Israel.
After undergoing initial medical checks, the released hostages were reunited with their families. Medical authorities have reported that they appear to be in good physical condition and are currently undergoing further evaluations.
Roni Haviv, a relative of Ohad Munder, expressed her anticipation of giving the 9-year-old his favorite toy. She eagerly awaits the opportunity to give him his Rubik’s Cube, which she knows he loves and has missed dearly.
The release of the hostages on Friday was in exchange for 24 jailed Palestinian women and 15 teenagers. Witnesses reported that in at least three cases, Israeli police raided the homes of these prisoners’ families in Jerusalem. However, the police declined to comment on these incidents.
Despite the release, there is a sense of cautiousness and fear among the families. Sawsan Bkeer, the mother of 24-year-old Palestinian prisoner Marah Bkeer, who was jailed for eight years on knife and assault charges in 2015, expressed her mixed emotions. She stated that there is no real joy, as they are still afraid and deeply affected by the ongoing situation in Gaza.
A source familiar with the negotiations revealed that the release of the Thai workers, all of whom were men, was unrelated to the truce talks and followed a separate track mediated by Egypt and Qatar.
Both sides have acknowledged that the war will resume as soon as the truce comes to an end.

The release of the hostages is seen as a positive step towards de-escalation and a potential end to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The four-day truce, facilitated by Qatar, has provided an opportunity for negotiations and the exchange of prisoners.
However, the situation remains delicate and there are still concerns about the well-being of those left behind. The families of the hostages are filled with mixed emotions, torn between their happiness for the reunited families and their own worries for their loved ones who are still captive.
The release of the hostages is not only a relief for the families involved, but also for the international community who have been closely following the events in Gaza. The captives, both Israeli and Palestinian, have been subjected to a prolonged period of uncertainty and fear. Their release brings hope for a better future and the possibility of renewed peace talks.
The Israeli government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has made it a priority to secure the release of all hostages taken by Hamas. The receipt of the hostage list is a significant step towards achieving this goal. Israeli security officials are now carefully reviewing the list to ensure the safe return of all those who have been held captive.
It should be noted that the release of the hostages is a reciprocal action, as Israel has also released Palestinian detainees from its jails. This exchange is an important gesture of goodwill and a testament to the commitment of both sides to work towards a peaceful resolution.
As Israel awaits the return of its remaining hostages, the focus now shifts to the future. The hope is that this exchange will pave the way for further negotiations and a lasting ceasefire. The international community must continue to support these efforts and offer assistance in rebuilding Gaza and improving the lives of its residents.
While there is still a long way to go in achieving a lasting peace in the region, the release of the hostages is a significant step forward. It is a moment of cautious optimism and a reminder that even in the midst of conflict, there is always room for dialogue and reconciliation.
