Netanyahu’s Grip on Power in Israel Teeters Amid Contradictions
The Political Pendulum Swings in Israel
As Israel finds itself grappling with one of its most intense conflicts in history, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu navigates a remarkably intricate situation. At the heart of this is a striking contradiction that threatens to undermine his tenure.
“The loss of trust in him is really prevalent here,” a European official in Israel remarked. “While there is unity over the war’s objectives, confidence in Netanyahu’s leadership is waning.”
Having been a defining figure in Israeli politics since the 1990s, Netanyahu built his reputation on ensuring national security. However, the events of October 7, when Hamas incursions sparked the ongoing strife, have challenged his leadership and exposed cracks within his coalition of centrists and hard-liners.
A prime example is Benny Gantz, the Israeli opposition leader-turned-war cabinet minister, who recently distinguished himself on the international stage with his diplomatic outreach in Washington and London.
“With each passing day of conflict, the coalition’s vulnerability becomes more apparent,” Jonathan Schanzer from the Foundation for Defense of Democracy commented. “The prospect of elections looms, placing Netanyahu in a race against time to solidify his achievements for public approval.”
Despite these challenges, Netanyahu faces external pressures too. Critical voices, like those of U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have been unnervingly blunt:
“Netanyahu’s prioritization of his political survival over Israel’s interests is a serious misstep. His alignment with extreme factions and the toll on Gazan civilians are bringing Israel’s global support to worrying lows,” Schumer declared, calling for new elections to rejuvenate Israel’s decision-making.
Conversely, domestic turmoil has marred Netanyahu’s administration. His attempt to limit judicial powers led to widespread protests and military reservists’ dissent, which stalled the legislative effort.
The tension was laid bare when IDF Brig. Gen. Dan Goldfus rebuked the political leadership, insisting that the military’s commitment deserves a government “worthy” of their sacrifices. Despite censure from IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Goldfus’s concerns reflect a broader discomfort within the military ranks.
The Ultra-Orthodox Draft Controversy: A Ticking Time Bomb?
The ever-sensitive issue of the military draft for ultra-Orthodox Jews continues to stir controversy and threatens to destabilize Netanyahu’s coalition.
- Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant seeks a centrist-consented solution.
- National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir warns this impasse could trigger elections.
With Gantz sidestepping discussions due to a lack of constructive engagement from Netanyahu, and the possibility that the draft exemption’s persistence could mobilize reservists politically, the issue remains a volatile wildcard in Israeli politics.
Political Maneuvering and Future Uncertainties
Meanwhile, progressive-left pressure in the U.S. could further complicate matters for Netanyahu in an election year, particularly given Michigan’s pivotal Arab American voter bloc.
Gantz’s own political stance is precarious as key ally Gideon Sa’ar distances himself, seeking to represent the “dignified right.” Yet, the likelihood of ”moderate voices” prevailing in Israel is far from certain, due in part to the country’s demographic shift toward conservatism.
The current political narrative in Israel is thus as fractured as it is fraught, with the outcomes of this crisis as unpredictable as the allegiances shaping it.

While U.S. intelligence hints at the potential rise of a “more moderate government” post-election, the realpolitik of Israel’s shifting demographic landscape suggests otherwise. As the spectrum of Israeli politics leans further right, the idea of a centrist pivot remains hypothetical at best. Will the upcoming elections signal a dramatic shift, or will they reinforce the ideological convictions that align so closely with Netanyahu’s base? Only time will tell.
