Italy’s AGCM Accepts Google’s Commitments to End Data Portability Case

The competition watchdog in Italy, AGCM, announced on Monday that it has accepted the commitments proposed by Google to resolve a case involving the tech giant’s alleged abuse of its dominant position in the user data portability market.
The investigation was initiated last year after a complaint from Italian startup Hoda, which accused Google of impeding its users’ right to share personal data with other digital service platforms.
In response to the probe, Google proposed changes to its data backup service to improve users’ ability to extract their personal data from Alphabet’s services, according to the regulator’s statement.
The company also committed to releasing a test version of a tool that would allow other digital service operators to access personal data generated by users on Alphabet services. The official release of this tool is scheduled for next year.
“Overall, the authority has deemed Google’s commitments suitable for addressing concerns over competition,” stated AGCM.
A spokesperson for Google welcomed AGCM’s decision, emphasizing the company’s investment in data portability to enhance user experience while safeguarding privacy and security.
Last year, AGCM warned that the alleged abuse could limit the economic benefits consumers derive from their data and hinder competition. If found guilty, Google could have faced a fine of up to 10% of its annual global sales.
