It’s Kyrsten Sinema’s Turn To Tour The Border With Speaker McCarthy
TUCSON, Ariz. — Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., wasn’t with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week when he toured the border in her own backyard. Next time she should be.
Thursday saw the new House speaker travel with four GOP freshmen to see firsthand the Arizona border crisis. McCarthy shared in an exclusive interview with The Federalist that the Arizona senator wasn’t invited on this trip, but she’s more than welcome on the next.
“I didn’t invite any senators,” McCarthy spoke of his first border visit since assuming his new post. McCarthy replied that he would bring her when questioned about whether he would ever do so. “gladly.”
“I’d invite her,” The speaker nodded.
Sinema’s bicameral border trip with the Republican House Speaker could prove to be a political juggernaut. She is up for reelection in 2024. A Democrat senator who’s framed herself as a moderate in an upper chamber that’s dominated by far-left interests, Sinema could not only help her chances for another six-year term but also help get something done — if she actually cared about the border.
Sinema publicly rebuked the party she was in in December. declared She will remain an independent for the remainder of her term. The announcement made on Capitol Hill did not affect the function of the office. The Arizona lawmaker continues to caucus with Democrats who have a larger Senate majority after the November midterms. The move allows Sinema to rebel more often against her party in a conference in which Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is still in control of his leadership by one vote.
Sinema knows she has a tough road to re-election next year, and she knows the state’s border with Mexico, neglected by D.C. Democrats, will be a liability. Arizona Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly had to speak out against the Biden administration in a fall debate. His opponent, Republican Blake Masters, demanded Kelly resign.
“When the president decided he was going to do something dumb on this, and change the rules,” Kelly , “I told him he was wrong.”
Sinema has invited McCarthy to a border trip, which could help stop potential attacks by a Republican opponent next season. It would also harass members of her conference in order to pass something. McCarthy also knows he’ll need an ally across the aisle to get border legislation through a divided government. They were seen dining together in February.
Sinema has already been a leader bipartisan delegation A multi-day, eight-member trip that took place in January to El Paso (Texas) was a multiday affair. It was quite different from the previous tour. sanitized version President Joe Biden was also affected by the event.
Sinema announced her decision to quit the Democratic Party on Sunday. Blasphemy The federal response to the crisis at the border was a failure.
“The federal government has failed here. Places like Arizona, front lines of this crisis, have been paying the price every single day since then,” CNN interviewed Sinema, who added:
" Conservative News Daily does not always share or support the views and opinions expressed here; they are just those of the writer."
