Ivy League Tuition Soars to $90,000 Annually

The Rising Cost of Higher Education: Ivy League Tuition Nears $90,000

The cost of tuition at Ivy League universities is nearing $90,000, highlighting the continuously increasing fees of higher education at the nation’s most prestigious schools.

The escalating tuition fees push the cost of attending these elite universities into the $300,000 range over a four-year period, and the trend shows no signs of slowing down despite high inflation.

Yale University increased tuition by 4%, while Brown University and Dartmouth each raised tuition by 5%, leading the combined cost of tuition and room and board to soar to $84,828 and $83,880 to attend Brown and Yale, respectively.

Other prestigious schools, such as Cornell University and the University of Pennsylvania, are charging $84,568 and $84,570, respectively for tuition, fees, and room and board, while to attend Dartmouth costs $84,300. Harvard and Princeton are behind their counterparts, with a list price of $76,763 and $76,040, respectively.

According to American Enterprise Institute higher education economist Beth Akers, “At some point, that math stops working out. We get to a place where these degrees are just no longer worth it.”

In 2000-2001, the average total cost of attending a private university (tuition plus room and board) was $22,401; in the 2021-2022 academic year, private institutions nationwide were charging an average of $51,690. This increase in college costs is occurring alongside a rise in student loan debt, with students graduating with an average of $31,100 in loan debt to date.
