The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Identifies Suspect in Racially Motivated Mass Shooting
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect in Saturday’s racially motivated mass shooting as 21-year-old Ryan Palmeter.
Palmeter, a white man, shot and killed three black people inside a Dollar General store in Jacksonville, Florida, on Saturday before fatally shooting himself. He reportedly used a Glock handgun and an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle, onto which he had painted a swastika. He was also wearing a bullet-resistant vest.

The sheriff’s office confirmed Palmeter’s identity in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday.
“He hated black people,” Sheriff T.K. Waters said of the suspect, later identified as Palmeter, at a press briefing late Saturday evening.
Investigators said the shooter sent writings to federal law enforcement and at least one media outlet before the attack outlining his motives.
“There is absolutely no evidence the shooter is part of any larger group,” Waters added.
