Jacky Rosen commended an LGBT organization educating children on diverse topics, including witchcraft and self-exploration.
Our Center Reno: Empowering the Nevada Democratic Socialists of America Chapter
When Sen. Jacky Rosen (D., Nev.) visited Our Center Reno last month, she expressed gratitude towards its staff and praised the invaluable “local resources” the organization offers to children in the area. These resources include a diverse range of programs such as the “Queer Pagan Exploration” club, a “transdiscovery” group for 11-year-olds, and a sex education curriculum that sparked controversy and was banned by a nonpartisan Nevada school board over four years ago.
Our Center Reno proudly identifies itself as an “LGBTQIA+ community center” and serves as a meeting place for various far-left organizations, including the Northern Nevada Democratic Socialists of America. The center hosts regular events like “drag story hour,” provides “free gender-affirming haircuts” for transgender children, and offers ”free legal advice” for individuals interested in transgender surgery.
What sets Our Center Reno apart are its unique and unconventional programs. For instance, it organizes monthly “Queer Pagan Exploration” classes that delve into intriguing topics like witchcraft and pentagrams. Additionally, the organization conducts “summer intensive” study groups focused on the controversial Scarleteen Queer Sex Education curriculum, which not only teaches children about sexual health but also encourages them to explore their own bodies.
Rosen’s visit to Our Center Reno on July 8 aligned with her commitment to defending “LGBTQ+ rights” during a time when they are under attack, as she mentioned on Twitter. Her trip to her home state coincided with a series of meetings with constituents in Reno, including a roundtable discussion with female veterans.
Nevada’s upcoming Senate race in 2024 is expected to be highly competitive, as Rosen will be up for reelection. Republicans have already identified her seat as a target and have recently convinced former Army captain Sam Brown to enter the race, as reported by the Free Beacon.
Established in 2009, Our Center Reno faced financial challenges and remained closed from 2016 to 2021. However, it has since emerged as a prominent left-wing advocacy group in Northern Nevada. One of the center’s most controversial aspects is its unwavering support for the Scarleteen program, which was removed from the approved education resources list by the Washoe County Board of Education in 2019.
During the school board’s discussions on the proposed sex education curriculum, concerned parents voiced their objections to Scarleteen’s lessons on gender identity and other contentious topics. Karen England, the executive director of the Nevada Family Alliance, expressed her concerns about the curriculum’s explicit content, stating that it was “way too much too soon for 14-year-olds” and contained “very graphic” material for teenagers.
After a lengthy public comment session, the nonpartisan school board voted 5-2 to remove any references to Scarleteen from the curriculum, reflecting the community’s reservations about the program.
Scarleteen describes itself as a “progressive, independent sexuality and relationships education media and support organization” that provides in-person outreach to teenagers. However, a closer examination of Scarleteen’s educational materials reveals why even a school board in solidly blue Washoe County had concerns.
Scarleteen offers literature such as a guide titled “How Do You Masturbate?” that recommends “pre-orgasmic people” and “younger” individuals engage in “a daily masturbation session, over at least several weeks.” Another guide called “The Transmasculine Flow” suggests elective hysterectomies as a solution for those seeking to “affirm their gender.”
Scarleteen also operates an internet message board where children as young as 13 can ask questions about sex, which are often answered by adults. Disturbingly, one instance involved a 14-year-old discussing a “diaper” and feces “fetish,” to which a Scarleteen staff member named “Sam” responded with a guide called the “Sex Readiness Checklist.”
Heather Corinna, the owner of Scarleteen, also writes an advice column for children and young adults. In a 2008 post updated in 2023, she addressed the question of whether a 23-year-old man attracted to teenagers is “a pedophile.” Corinna’s response included statements such as “in both humans and the rest of the animal kingdom, it’s not unusual for a person to be attracted to someone who has the physically markers of adulthood and fertility” and emphasized the possibility of “rich sexual and interpersonal relationships” with individuals of any age.
In July, Scarleteen partnered with Lucky Bloke, a sex shop, allowing Scarleteen to receive 40 percent of revenue from purchases made on its website. The partnership offers items like condoms and lubricants that are discreetly shipped in packaging that does not reveal their contents.
Despite requests for comment, Rosen did not respond.
