Jamaal Bowman accuses Israel of racism; critics respond
Accusations and Controversy Surrounding Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s Statement on Israel
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), who has faced accusations of lying about pulling a fire alarm in a House office building, recently made a statement that sparked intense backlash. In his statement, he targeted Israel, claiming that he was stopped at Israeli checkpoints because he wasn’t Jewish.
Speaking on MSNBC, Bowman boldly declared, “So we’ve been using a lot of rhetoric about a two-state solution for decades, and when I went there I saw that we are nowhere near a two-state solution. Myself, as a sitting member of Congress, could not walk through certain checkpoints in the West Bank because I wasn’t Jewish.”

New York State Assemblywoman Amy Paulin, a Democrat, disputed Bowman’s claim:
I checked with two people on the same trip and this didn’t happen. He traveled with a delegation of American Congressmen.

Jamaal Bowman isn’t just lying. He is advancing a false antisemitic libel that is going to rile up a crowd and get someone hurt. Intentional lies about Israel and the Jewish People should find no quarter in the halls of Congress. Send Bowman home! https://t.co/TlEdv19cbh

New York Democrat Rep. Ritchie Torres, a staunch supporter of Israel, fired back at Bowman, saying, “Jewish checkpoints are as fictional as Jewish space lasers.” This prompted leftist J Street president Jeremy Ben Ami to respond, “I led the trip with @JamaalBowmanNY. It’s a fact: there are checkpoints in Hebron where security separates who can walk where by religion. Other checkpoints keep roads ‘sterile’ of Palestinians. I’ve been there dozens of times. Join me.”
Podcast host Noam Blum then bluntly stated that Ben Ami was lying, clarifying that the separation is between Palestinians, Israelis (including Israeli Muslims), and foreigners. Blum referenced a detailed report from Honest Reporting that debunked the claim of “Jews-only roads” in the disputed territories, highlighting that it is part of the anti-Semitic label used to vilify Israel.
Michael Totten, in response to similar accusations made by journalist Helen Thomas, explained, “Such roads don’t exist. The roads she’s referring to in the West Bank are Israeli, and they’re not just for Jews. Israeli Arabs can drive on them, and so can non-Jewish foreigners, including Arab and Muslim foreigners. Palestinians were once able to drive on them but have not been allowed to do so since the second intifada, when suicide bombers used them to penetrate Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in order to massacre people.”
Bowman recently pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of falsely pulling a fire alarm, resulting in a $1,000 fine, three months’ probation, and a formal apology to the U.S. Capitol Police (USCP).
House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil (R-WI) released a statement in October dismissing Bowman’s explanation of the September 30 incident, citing findings by law enforcement.
“Rep. Bowman’s excuse does not pass the sniff test. After pulling the fire alarm, Rep. Bowman fled the scene, passed by multiple Capitol Police officers, and had every opportunity to alert USCP of his mistake,” Steil said. “I want to thank U.S. Capitol Police for their swift attention to this incident and encourage the Ethics Committee to further pursue this matter.”

How do the claims made by Rep. Jamaal Bowman conflict with the accounts of individuals who were present during the same trip?
Unking-the-myth-of-jewish-only-checkpoints/”>report by Honest Reporting, which states that the checkpoints in question are meant to ensure the safety and security of all individuals, regardless of their religion.
It is clear that Bowman’s statement has ignited a significant amount of controversy and accusations. While some individuals and politicians have come to his defense, others argue that his statements are baseless and perpetuate false narratives about Israel and Jewish people. The fact that his claims have been contradicted by individuals who were present on the same trip raises further doubt about the veracity of his statements.
Accusing Israel of implementing discriminatory practices based on religion is a serious claim that should not be made lightly. Such claims can contribute to the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes and fuel anti-Semitic sentiment. It is crucial for public figures, especially members of Congress, to exercise caution and ensure that their statements are based on accurate information and evidence.
It is also essential to acknowledge the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the challenges faced by both Israelis and Palestinians in their pursuit of a peaceful resolution. Simplistic and one-sided narratives only hinder the progress towards a sustainable and just solution.
In a time when tensions in the region are high, it is necessary for leaders to promote dialogue, understanding, and diplomacy to work towards a resolution. Painting an inaccurate picture of the situation on the ground and making false accusations only serves to further exacerbate the conflict and hinder the prospects of peace.
As the accusations and controversy surrounding Rep. Jamaal Bowman’s statement on Israel continue to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to approach the situation with nuance, integrity, and a commitment to the truth. Only through respectful and honest engagement can progress be made towards a more peaceful and equitable future in the region.
