James Taylor apologizes to fans after being cut from opening night at DNC – Washington Examiner
James Taylor recently expressed his disappointment to fans after being cut from the lineup on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention (DNC). He stated that programming delays prevented his performance from taking place. Despite the setback, Taylor shared his excitement about the event and the rehearsal he had with talented musicians. The 76-year-old artist noted that the overwhelming response from the audience took the organizers by surprise.
In his Instagram post, Taylor conveyed his sentiments, saying, “It was exciting to see and hear so many of the speakers at the opening night of the Democratic convention here in Chicago.” He acknowledged the enthusiastic applause that delayed the event, leading to a shortened program.
The DNC, which aimed for a strong showcase of support for the Harris-Walz ticket, adjusted its schedule to ensure President Joe Biden could deliver his speech, which occurred later than expected due to crowd reactions. Taylor concluded his message by conveying honor in being a part of such an inspirational event, despite the disappointment of not performing.

Legendary musician and longtime Democratic Party supporter James Taylor told his fans he was “sorry to disappoint” them on the opening night of the Democratic National Convention, in which his performance was cut due to significant programming delays.
“It was exciting to see and hear so many of the speakers at the opening night of the Democratic convention here in Chicago. And we had a great rehearsal with @RickeyMinor and terrific singers @KenyaHathaway and Mathew Johnson before the event,” Taylor wrote on Instagram.
The 76-year-old performer explained that “organizers couldn’t anticipate the wild response from the floor of the United Center.”
“Anyway, sorry to disappoint. But a great and inspirational, quintessentially American moment. We were honored to be there,” he said about the opening night of the 2024 DNC.
President Joe Biden‘s speech was delayed until 11:25 p.m. Eastern, after prime time, on Monday night and lasted an hour.
DNC organizers said the delay was due to the excitement and energy of the crowd.
“Because of the raucous applause interrupting speaker after speaker, we ultimately skipped elements of our program to ensure we could get to President Biden as quickly as possible so that he could speak directly to the American people,” convention officials reportedly said. “We are proud of the electric atmosphere in our convention hall and proud that our convention is showcasing the broad and diverse coalition behind the Harris-Walz ticket throughout the week on and off stage.”
Taylor had been spotted earlier in the day rehearsing during sound check in preparation for performing that night. He also performed at the 2012 convention and the second inauguration of former President Barack Obama.
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert aired a parody Tuesday night of a dubbed version of the song “Fire and Rain” that pretended to show Taylor singing angrily about being cut from the lineup.
“I’ll set fires, and I’ll bring pain,” a fake version of Taylor’s voice sang in the satire. “I’ll bend your limbs in ways that limbs should never bend. Create traumas your mind cannot comprehend.”
