Jasmine Crockett cites Fetterman’s hoodies in deflecting criticism of TikTok use

Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) hit back at Sen. John Fetterman’s (D-PA) criticism of a recent TikTok video featuring multiple Democratic lawmakers, saying, “I don’t show up in hoodies” when in Congress.

Fetterman was one of several to criticize Crockett and other lawmakers for participating in a “choose your fighter” TikTok dance video. The video caught the attention of the Trump White House’s Rapid Response 47 X account, which deemed it “cringe.”

Crockett said that a social media influencer asked her to participate in the video. She added that she felt it was important to show voters lawmakers are “real people” and that it is OK to take “a moment to laugh.”

“But just know that we were not on the House floor jumping around at all, whereas Senator Fetterman is consistently walking around the Senate Chamber, and he is walking around in such a way that they literally had to change the rules in the Senate so that he could walk around that way,” Crockett said.

Crockett was referring to how, in 2023, the Senate suspended traditional dress code rules, which required members to wear a jacket and tie. Republicans suggested this was done to appease Fetterman, whose casual attire is a hoodie and shorts. As such, the Texas representative argued Fetterman could not “actually have an opinion” on her TikTok use.

Fetterman has not responded to Crockett’s comments as of Monday morning.

Crockett also criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) following his decision to side with most Senate Republicans on a continuing resolution, saying that Senate Democrats need to “sit down and take a look and decide whether or not Chuck Schumer is the one to lead in this moment.” The lawmaker did not rule out supporting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) as a possible primary challenger to Schumer. Ocasio-Cortez was also featured in the “choose your fighter” TikTok video.

The Texas Democrat is not the only Democratic lawmaker who defended their use of Tiktok. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) argued last week she was moving “with the times” in a bid to reach out to voters through the platform and avoid the risk of being “left behind.”
